and Kilkenny Boy James Butlers aspirants for Kentucky Derby honors are non quartered at Louisville and it is understood that they will take no part In racing until Derby day Pebbles dayPebbles I suppose must be conftidered the public choice for the classic but a glance at his last years performances shows Unit he isno smasher for Sharpshooter in receipt it is true of 10 pounds beat him out of a place in a mile race at Laurel last fall and Regret was altogether too much for him at Saratoga I do not know that Pebbles pedigree reads like getting one and onequarter miles in highclass company so early as May 8 and Pebbles should his connections elect to keep him in Louisville will not have the ad ¬ vantage of a run in public before the day of the race Here is his pedigree Ben Brush Pebbles sire has given to the turf such notable race horses as Broomstick and Delhi and is mainly instrumental in having kept the Bonnie Scotland line alive in this country Bramble Ben Brushs sire introduces besides the Bonnie Scotland strain the blood of those famous imported horses Australian and Yorkshire Rosevllle1 Ben Brushs dam is a daughter of the purebred Reform son of Leamington and Stolen Kisses by Knight of Kara n direct tail male descendant of Smolonsko the only black horse winch ever won the Epsom Derby Allifa Ben Brushs granddam introduces the Hying blood of Alarm and Ben Brush is a member of the Maria West line the greatest of all American families and though this line Is not accorded a place In Bruce Lowes figure guide it is more productive of famous race horses prolific broodmares and successful stallions than many another family honored with a figure by the Australian statistician statisticianRunning Running Stream Pebbles dam Is by Domino giving to the pedigree another cross of the speedy Mood of Alarm and an additional strain to Leamington by way of Knquircr so that Pebbles is certainly lired for speed Old Rosebud last years winner of the Kentucky Derby was also bred on this plan of returning the blood of Alarm Moreover Running Stream had a bit of class about her In her racing days and In Eng ¬ land won among other races the July Stakes at Newmarket NewmarketDancing Dancing Water granddam of Pebbles was an Imported daughter of Isonomy and is a stoutlybred iwml er of the No 14 family It is worthy of notice that Cyllene a smasher on tho race course and famous as the sire of four Derby winners Is out of one of Isononiys daughters Arcadia Then comes Pretty Dance by Doncaster and Doncaster although defeated by Mary Stuart in the St Leger afterwards proved himself the better stayer by winning the Ascot Sold Cup Back of this too the pedigree is first class showing as it does crosses of Scottish Chief Lambonrm and Touchstone and perhaps all this accumulation of staying blood at the back of the pedigree will counter balance the sprinting tendencies of the Domino line How over judged both on his pedigree and performances Pebbles forte would appear to be speed rather than endurance enduranceLast Last Coin and Kilkenny Boy are sons of the double Domino horses Ultimus and Hippodrome both of which are maidens and if these two are to succeed as sires Imported mates are surely necessary Ultimus got Luke McLuke out of Midge by Trenton from Sandfly by Isonomy and Luke McLukes wonderful racing merit was I am convinced due largely to his Trenton blood for he closely resembles that grand horse in color and general characteristics Here is Last Coins pedigree Ultimus Is Inbred to Domino and strangely enough Last Coins dam Half Crown is inbred to Distant shore daughter of Hermit maternal ancestress of both Cyllene sire of Half Crown and Half Crown her ¬ self Half Crown I take it is an exceptionally wellbred mare Cyllene her sire was a wonder and his dam was Arcadia by Isonomy which Is a splendid return for the Isonomv strain found in the pedigree of Ultimus and should the influence of Isonomy predominate Last Coin may be found capable of stayhi the one and onequarter miles Derby route Bona Vista Cylleues sire gives to the pedigree a dasli of the best broodmare blood in the world that of Macaroni Lady Minting a big line mare DERBY Continued from first page Minting sire of Maid of the Mint Spearmints dam son of Lord Lyou and Mint Sauce by the famous bicodmare Hire Young Melbourne Next In line we llnd Virginia Shore by tlie Voltlgeur horse John Davis and so on down to Maid of Mashum In fact Half Crown possesses a splendid pedigree and would I am convinced be admirably suited by a horse of St Simon descent and from such a union I should expect a Derbv winner indeed Should Last Coin prove to be the winner his success must be attributed to the doubling up of the Isonomy and Doncaster strains strainsKilkenny Kilkenny Boy like his famous halfbroiler Celt is i chestnut and raced with considerable success on the eastern track Ihst season but I rather think bin form was inferior to that of either Pebbles or Last Coin However Maid of Erin his dam Is an exceedingly wellbred daughter of Amphlon and produced In Celt th best staying son of Commando and I have It on good authority that he was Coliifs master over a u tnn 0 nf Around Here is Kilkenny Boys pedigree Hippodrome Kilkenny Bovs sire like Ultiuius Is a maiden and also shows a double cross of the Dom ¬ ino strain I tell you without fear of contradiction that this Inbreeding is injurious that the race course test Is the only true test and that breeding to maidens Is courting disaster American turfmen tardily it Is true have at last been brought to realize the superiority of the British thoroughbred horse which super ¬ iority is in a measure due to horror of English breeders for a maiden Of course occasional eases such as Wisdom crop out but few maidens Indeedare patronized to any extent by the blood stock breeders of tin British Isles Run your eye over the list of famous English stallions since me days ofDiomed nn down to 1olyinelns and won will see that 05 per cent Of them enjoyed a successful raring career Hlpimdroines careerHlpimdroines granddam EtHtha was a sister to the Derby winner Melton and Is a member of Bruce Lowes No S family famous for the production of great sires a point in Hippodromes favor However I think students of pedigrees will agree that should Kilkenny Boy demonstrate any great ability as a race lorMj that his excellence In this respect will be largely due to the influence of his dam that great producer and wellbred daughter of Amphion Maid of Erin ErinMaid Maid of Erins sin Amphlon is a Blaeklock horse and is the sire of Sundridge and Maid of Erin Is out of Imported Mavourncpu Voters dam by the Matchem horse Barcaldine which also got The Task Sains dam ami Barley dam of Malster which reigned so long as the champion sin of Australia AustraliaThe The family of Maid of Erin is the same from which P Pep ep oDay descends the Sutillower branch of the No 1 family and shows a line return through Flora MacDoiiald by Scottish Chief to he same strain In Violet Melrose dam of Editha which appears in Hippodromes pedigree and erhaps this wealth of staying blood in conjunction witli the speed transmitted by Alarm may enable Kilkenny Boy to attain high rank as a race horse horseWriting Writing a few days ago on tlie pedigree of PIf Jr I gave his sire as Watercress This was an error Plf Jrs sire is Waterlioy son of Watercress and out of Zealandla by Sir Modrcd and a New Zoaiander which Hit late James Bllaggin Imported some years back and whlch stood as a highly successful stallion lor a number of vears at his Ranclio del Paso stud in California Xcalandla was as near as anything clean bred out of Roke by Alarm from Rokeo by Waverly son of iniiM rtt d Australian and imported Cicely Jopson bv Weittherbit Eolipse 1 Itrod and Matchcm again Rosaline the next dam wan by Commodore which Introduces tin American strain and Rosaline was out of Fanny Wells by Imported Sovereign from Reel dtim of War Dance bv imported Glencoe tint of Imported Galopide Waterlioy was quite lirst class as a race horse and his early death Is greatly to be deplored especially as be had met with much success as a stallion
