PIMLICOS EACINa POPULAR RECORD ATTENDANCE MARKS OPENING DAY OF THE SPRING MEETING Favorites Have Matters All Their Own Way Andrew Carries High Weight Successfully Kewessa Takes Another Race Pimlico Md May 1 Favorites all but swept the board on the opening day of the spring meeting at Pimlico this afternoon When six of the seven choices romped home in front winners by com ¬ fortable margins probably the largest crowd that has ever passed the turnstiles at the old course was on hand to witness the running of the card Baltimore society made it a gala day and thu clubhouse and lawns were taxed to their utmost to hold the crowd that journeyed out Three main features were down for decision but the vietorv or the Quiucy stables Andrew in shouldering his big weight overshadowed the others MeCahey who had the mount oil the xoii of Disguise loafed along close up with him and drew away when ready winning comfortably Kewessa added another purse to his long string when he tiptoed a field of sprinters iu the Severn Purse Ballybay took down the steeplechase tfor Ral Parr in good style although he was ridden out at the cud to outstay Meshuch MeshuchJohn John Paul has taken jockey Lilley to Kentucky and he will ride there until the opening of thu racing season at Belmont Park when he will re ¬ turn to his contract employer Gilford A Cochran The CochranThe stakes for Woodbine and Blue Bonnets will close Monday MondayEginont Eginont has been sold by T IL Healey repre ¬ senting Richard T Wilson to the Mispah stable a racing string that Is owned by a New York sportsman Kingly is another mumbci of the stable and it is the intention to buy other good ones onesThe The Harry Payne Whitney horses intended for racing in Kentucky left the Brookdalo farm by special train this afternoon and were picked up at Philadelphia by u fast train Dr McCully and James Rowe both ucuumptiuied the horses horsesSeveral Several jockeys and trailers who failed to supply themselves with licenses were refused temporary licenses when they made application this afternoon They were jockeys II Cavanaugh J Roouey R Smalk and J Walsh trainers Joe Buschcr JJ1 Gcodman R Jackson C Phillips J Powers K Watts and R L Jones Incidentally K L Jones was programed at Havre de Grace as the trainer of the horses of J W Hedrlck Jr Notice was sent out early in the year that no temporary licenses would be issued and it was merely fol ¬ lowing no that declaration declarationAlgernon Algernon Dalngerfield secretary of the Jockey Club was a visitor at Pimlico this afternoon He brought the news that on the opening day of the Belmout Park meeting part of the receipts would be donated to charity All of the 125 boxes will be turned over to the committee in charge of fund and they hare already been disposed of at 50 apiece On every admission ticket 1 will be donated to the fund and fifty cents from grand stand and twentylive cents from field admissions The programs will be disposed of by youug so ¬ ciety women and will also be donated Mrs Van derbilt and Mrs Belmont are In charge of tlio arrangements The three charities which will ben ¬ efit by the donations are the Lafayette fund the Mercy fund and the Blue Cross fund the latter an organization which looks after horses injured in tlit European conflict
