STOCKWELL AND ST SIMON AS SIRES Until St Simon came on the scene there never was a thoroughbred sire in what may be termed modern times that achieved anything like the same wonderful stud success as Stoekwcll which may be said to have reached bis zenith as a stallion in 1SC when three of his sons Lord Lyon Savernake and Rustic occupied the three leading places in the Derby Not only that for Lord Lyon and Monarch of the Glen also by Stockwell ran first and second for the Two Thousand Guineas and the first two in the Derby occupied the same positons in the St Leger while Repulse secured for Stockwell the One Thousand Guineas In the matter of the total amounts won by his sons and daughters Stochwells record was considerably inferior to that of St Simon for in the twentyfour seasons that the stock of the great son of Galopin won races in this country they amassed the huge sum in stakes of 2743 50025 From a table compiled by Mr Moorhousc it can l e seen that the sons ami daughters of Stock well won their total of 1794945 in only nineteen years their sire dying as the result of an ac ¬ cident when onlv twentyone years old The get of St Simon therefore which lived to twenty seven had an advantage of five years over the offspring of the mighty golden chestnut son of The Baron Pocahontas In Stockwells day more ¬ over there were no teutliousandpoundcrs to swell ills winning totaL whereas sons of St Simon among them carried off four Eclipse Stakes two Princess of AVales Stakes mid two Jockey Club Stakes When Stockwells death occurred early in May 1S70 it was given out that lie died of in ¬ ternal inflammation but not many years ago this was corrected and Griffiths who witnessed the accident has now confirmed the version that he reared nji when brought into the covering yard overbalanced and fell on to his tail with the result that his spine was broken about four joints from the crup er Griffiths states We got Stockwell back to his box and tried to communicate with Mr Naylor who was away yachting at the time Day after day went by without our hear ¬ ing anything Stockwell died alwut the ninth day May 5 It was the gamcst death I ever saw He had walked coiitinuallr round his box and at tho end gave a loud neigh and dropped to the ground dead I never saw a man us cut up as old Mat Veal the man that looked after him lie cried for nearly a wrek and I heard him say in a sobbing voice Id ns soon ave lost our Ilia which was not exactly complimentary to ills wife Maria StockweK has the great height of crest so noticeable in the old pictures of the Gmlolphin Barb and which was also present in marked degree in St Simon Griffiths was at Ilooton all the time Stockwell was there and to Mr Moorhouse he confided a deal of most interest ¬ ing matter concerning his experiences as stud groom not nnly there but also under his father with Mr Cbnnlin at Blankney with Mr Hume Webster at Marden Deer Park and the late Downgpr Duchess of Montrose I must not quote further however and suffice it to say that Griffiths tells several nmusiug and instructive anecdotes of flic estimable but somewhat plainspoken lady which are new At all events I do not recollect having seen them in print before beforeAlthough Although from the point of view of stakes won St Simon was an easy first it is a deadheat Iiotwwn him nnd Stockwell in regard to the number of classic races secured bv their offspring each having sired the winners of seventeen Sloe wells list includes three Dcrbys Blair Athol Lord Lyon and Doncaster four races for the Two Thousand The Marquis Lord Lyon Rothwell and Gang Forward three of the One Thousand Lndy Augusta Repulse nnd Achievement one Oaks Regalia and six St Lecers St Albans Caller On The Marquis Blair Athol Lord Lyon nnd Achievement St Simons seventeen classic races consisted of two Dorbys Persimmon and Dia ¬ mond Jnhllc two Two Thousands St Krus quln nnd Diamond Jubilee four One Thousands Semolina La Fleohc Amiable and Winlfivili five races for tlto Oaks Memoir La Fitdie Mrs Kutlerwick Amiable nnd La Roche and font1 St Legers Memoir La Flechc Persimmon and Dia ni ° n4 JubjeetVlSilant In London gportsma
