BRISK OPENING AT DORVAL PARK PARKKing King Neptune Victor in the Juvenile Stakes Largo Attendance Dorval Track Much Improved ImprovedMontreal Montreal Que May 31 The Juvenile Stakes was offered as a feature by the Dorval Jockey Club for the opening of its spring meeting this afternoon It brought a small field to the post only four of the ten carded starting J S Tyree of Washington furnished the winner in his highly tried King Neptune which came from behind and under a strongly ridden finish wore Pesky down and heat her out by a half length There was a noticeable i in pro vein en t in track conditions and fast time was recorded Several of the races furnished exciting finishes The attendance was larger than any that had ever witnessed racing at the new course It was ladies day and this in a patronageAn measure was responsible for Hie big patronage An accident attended the running of the fifth race in which Phil Ungar with jockey Rice in the saddle was crowded against the fence and fell Rice was hurt internally hut not dangerously The stewards ridingEnoch warned jockey F COOIHT for rough riding Enoch Wisbard was a visitor to the course He will meetingsThere remain here for both Montreal meetings There will be a change In some of the officials at Ottawa this spring Sheridan Clarke will act as racing secretary and William J Morrison has been appointed judgeA patrol judge A wonderful improvement lias been made to the track proper at Dorval since last season Manager Holman and Sheridan Clarke have had a force of men at work experimenting with a new process to improve the track conditions and it has proved a great success The track was tirst treated with a solution made up of two barrels of blue clay re ¬ duced to a soupy state and this was added to a sprinkling cart tilled with water This was spread on the track with a light harrow following to mix the soil together The track was then rolled with a heavy roller on the inside and a light one on the outside Calcium carbide twenty tons to the mile was then spread on the track This vaporized and left the soil slightly oily which not only keeps down the dust but makes the soil pack last year the footing at Dorval was deep and would not pack This year the going is fully four seconds faster to the mile and by next fall the track at Dorval should be the fastest in Canada It is said that II D Brown will treat the track at Marianao in the same manner during the summer summerJoseph Joseph A Murphy is the presiding steward here this spring representing the Canadian Racing Asso ¬ ciations James Milton is the starter Francis Nelson Is presiding judge Sheridan Clarke the racing sec ¬ retary and Joseph McLennan clerk of the scales Maj J T McBride and Dr L J Lemieux are the associate stewards stewardsAlbert Albert Rohrbaok general manager of the Con naught Park Jockey Club was a visitor here this afternoon He reports glowiug prospects for a suc ¬ cessful meeting at the Ottawa track Applications exceeding the stabling capacity of the course by a couple of hundred stalls have already been received by the Connaught Park Jockey Club and Mr Rohr back has been forced to rent stabling on the outside to accommodate some of the overflow The track at Connaught Park will be subjected to the same treat ¬ ment that was used at Dorval in the hope of improv ¬ ing the footing footingRumor Rumor has it that Herman P Ccnkling one of the Jockey Club attaches will be associated with Joseph A Murphy and Joseph McLennan at New Orleans next winter and It is said that they will act as a board of stewards to govern the racing
