RICH STAKES TO CLOSE FOR ENTRIES. Offerings for the Spring and Summer Meetings at Douglas Park and Latonia. I.atonia. Ky.. March 4.— Next Wedneseday. March S. the array of stakes offered by the Douglas Dark and I.atonia Jockey Clubs close for entries. At the former course the big feature race is the Kentucky Handicap, inaugurated at the lirst spring meeting in 1913 and which is always the richest handicap race Of the year, with its 0,000 in added money. The first year, when it was won bv Rudol-fo. it was worth 2,150 net, while its net value in 1014 to Duke Mcl.uke was 1.510. Last year its net value to Borrow was 1,700. The distance of the Kentnck Handicap is one mile and a quarter, and the race record was made by Duke McLuke, his time being 2:02%, which is also the fastest mile and a quarter ever run in the state of Kentucky. The Kentucky Handicap calls for an entrance fee ol .f.iO. and 5it addlti nal to start, and of the 0,000 added. ,500 goes to the second and 1916.sh00 to the third hone, while the fourth horse saves its stake. The other events at Douglas Dark are: The Spring Trial Stakes, with ,500 added, for two year-olds, five eighths of a mile, which lias been Wli in its three renewals by such crack voungMors as Old BosebUd, Duke and Pulse. The slowest time this stake was ever won in was 59%, while in it Old Rosebud set the Kentucky record for this distance, 58%. The Memorial Handicap, with 82,008 added, for three j ear-olds and over, three-quarters of a mile. This event in its three years history has been wen by laugh Hill. I.e. .hares and Bradleys Choice, and us best record is 1:11%, scored bv Leocharea I he Speculation Slake-. selling, with ,500 added bu- three year bis and over: one mile and a -i-teenth. Its winners have been Gay Bird, Winning Witch and Hayberry Candle and it has always been productive of a good race. Douglas Park is by far the ruungeal of the Kentucky rare tracks, but under the skillful management of John Ilachmcister it has gained great popularity and ha- quicklj assumed a high place among the racing grounds of this state. Since 101.:. when the tir-t spring meeting at Douglas Parak was held, the distribution in -take-and purses for the last three years totals 72,623 The big race al I.atonia i- the Dcrhv which, like its English prototype, is a mile and hall. This event has 0,000 in added nionev and is as old as tae Latonia track. In the first four ream of racing at this course it was run as the Hindoo Stakes. Twice m this event has the mile and a half been run in 2:30%, by Governor Cray in 1911 and John .nnd m 1914. which is the Kentucky record for this distance. This stake was worth last vear 0 125 n.t to the winner. Royal ID. and it is sure to he even richer than that this year. The other events which will be ran at I-ttonia next spring and summer are eight in number and are stakes which long ago became popular with horsemen They are- The Cincinnati trophy, with ,000 added for tu -year-olds, three-quarters of a mile.
