STILL SMALL FIELDS AT BELMONT PARK. Mr. Kcenes Lorac Wins Her First Start of the Year — Virile First in a Drive. New York. June 2. — Warmer weather prevailed today antl the attendance was the bast of the week. with the exception of Memorial Day. A practically featureless card was down for decision, with t Infields still small on account of the horses hen-abouts not lieing up to racing form. The continued success of well-backed choices has worked havoc with the majority of the layers. The Toboggan Handicap tomorrow promises to bring out a representative field of sprinters and should develop into one of the best contests attending the raaateg of this aU-tteM fixture. Small liel.ls ruled in the majority of the rapes totl.-y and the l esf horses stood out in a manner to make them odds-on choices. The most of them made good. Aimee T. started the talent off when she took the opener easily. In the second Miss Inzzle. on the strength of her recent good race behind Hanson and Fernrock, was instilled favorite, but she was defeated by F. I*. Kcenes Korac. which led throughout. McDcrmott was not of miiili benelit to the Kutler tilly when it came to a drive. Saratoga, another odds-on choice, won his race from Daingerlield. which got up in time to take second place from Stalwart Helen. Virile, the shortest -priced horse of the day. had a hard task in Ix-ating Nephthys. The former was quoted at a short price and after being saved for the first gait of the journey, made up ground in the stretch with Taplin exerting all his skill to land him a winner. Hustler, the favorite in the steeplechase, had no contention after the falling of Kittle Nearer and Agon, his only antagonists. Yellowstone, a recent purchase of the Brighton Stable, seared the first victory for this stable this year when he won the sixth race. Defense, from the Madden barn and a good looker, failed here, but is I... mi. I to improve with racing. Ida Claire was withdrawn from the third race. Jockey Kail was engaged to ride the filly but his suspension made it necessary to obtain another rider, which his connections declined to do, good apprentice riders lieing scarce in this section. There have been no developments in the case of Kail, who was suspended pending an investigation of his Me on Ambrose yesterday. Word was received today at the course that W.i-dford Clay, a well-known turfman throughout the Inited States and Canada, had died in Kentucky. Mr. Clay was the son of Col. K. F. Clay, of the ol.l firm of Woodford and Clay, breeders of some of the best thoroughbreds this country has ever known. Mr. Clay was about forty years of age. a graduate of Yale and unmarried. He raced among other good horses on the tracks in the vicinity of New York Kady Amelia. Flying Ship. Outcome. Kentucky Keau and Ocean Hound. He brought to New York the champion of recent years. Hoamer, which he disposed of to Mr. Andrew Miller at the price of a good selling plat; r, the great worth of this unsexed son of Knight Krrant not having shown itself. Woodford and Clay bred Koimer. as well as most of the other horses raced by Woodford Clay. The dead turfman had many friends who will learn of his passing with sincere regr.-t.
