The owner is S. D. Riddle, a textile manufacturer of Philadelphia, who was probably attracted to racing largely through the hunt club angle, inasmuch as nearly all the horses in his stable are steeplechasers. Yankee Witch is a bay filly by Ogden Event, and was bred by John E. Madden. She is recognized as one of the best fillies of the year, having raced consistently and having beaten some of the best youngsters in training. The Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga was probably her most notable achievement and the most valuable, from a monetary consideration, to her owner. Next to Yankee Witch the well-known jumpers, J. C. Ewalt and Brentwood, with a half dozen steeplechase victories to their joint credit, came in for sharing the stables earning responsibilities, while Cactus Bud and Mohonk. two other jumpers, annexed a purse each in races through the field. Brentwood raced in the stable of T. Hitchcock until late in July and won two races for that gentleman previous to -changing owners.
