BIG PRICE FOR SUN BRIAR English Turfman Offers W S Kil ¬ mer Huge Sum for Crack Colt ProspectiveFavorite for Kentucky KentuckyDerby Derby Not for Sale Breeding BreedingHorses Horses Kilmers Hobby Louisville Ky January 19 That Willis Sharpe Kilmer had received an offer of ai huge sum from ain English turfman for the threeyearold colt Sun Briair and thait it was refused was announced by Mr Kilmer himself during the course of a flying visit lie was paying to Churchill Downs today The offer caime hist week by cable from an owner rank ¬ ing high in English turf circles but whose name Mr Kilmer would not disclose In the event of a deail being consummated the crack colt was to be shipped to England without delay delayMr Mr Kilmer came here from Lexington aiccom panied by his secretary and several friends and just remained long enough to look over his band of yearlings ait the Downs in charge of A D Steele arid to conclude arrangements for his acceptance of the position as manager of the Kilmer breeding es tablfshment ait Binghamton N Y It was air ranged thait Steele would assume his new duties upon the arrival here next week of trainer Henry MeDaniel who will bring Sim Briar and eight other horses to be trained for the Kentucky spring racing Steele has had a wide experience in the breeding business having been J E Maddens right hand man at Hamburg Place for over five years It was Mr Maddens recommendation that secured him his new position Steele has been in charge of the twelve yearlings that Mr Kilmer bought from Mad ¬ den hist August and these will be turned over to MeDaniel upon his arrival here hereDuring During his hurried visit here Mr Kilmer in ¬ spected these yearlings it being the first time he had ever seen them He had purchased the dozen all of which are by Ogden from Mr Madden rely ¬ ing solely upon that astute horsemains judgment aind sense of fair play He wns much impressed with the appearance of the youngsters as they were brought out for his inspection A son of Quebec in particular took his fancy owing to its striking resemblance to Sun Briar Only one of the young ¬ sters was found to be in ill health this one being a colt dam Belle Glendale which was found to hava developed spinal meningitis and will have to be de ¬ stroyed stroyedIncidentally Incidentally Mr Kilmer took occasion to correct the general impression that he is ai comparatively new recruit to the sport of racing He declared thait lie had been breeding thoroughbreds in England some years prior to his entry into the sport ais an owner in this country The breeding of high chiss horses is his hobby and this branch of the industry appeals more strongly to him than that of racing horses horsesESTABLISHMENT ESTABLISHMENT COMPRISES 126 HORSES HORSESAccordingly Accordingly lie has set out to indulge his whims in this respect on a lairge scale He is the owner at present of 12IJ thoroughbreds including staillions mares aind young horses This number embraces the four high class mares he secured at the Corrigain sale With these purchases he is particularly pleased being of the opinion thait with mares like Royail Quest sister to The Tetrach for which he paid 5000 and Midge which cost 3100 Rubia Grandai costing 4100 aiud Lady Echliue which was knocked down to him for 2350 he possesses some of the most highly bred matrons in the country countryAll All of these with the exception of Royail Quest are in foal and next season they will all be malted to Assagai for which Mr Kilmer paid ai large sum ait the Belle Meade dispersal sale and which witli Allemeiir aind Magic comprise the list of heaid stall lions ait his breeding establishment The mares at the farm number thirty while there are thirtyeight twoyearolds There are also quite ai few year ¬ lings the most promising of these being a colt by AssagaiiTouclinot the latter being the dam of Greait Britain BritainThe The Iiorses to be shipped to Churchill Downs in ¬ clude besides Sun Briair the threeyearold Nelsweep aim the fouryearold Torn McTaiggairt which wais bought from the Brighton stable for 12000 12000Mr Mr Kilmer is sweet on Nelsweep aind believes the colt is good enough to warrant his being mimed for the Kentucky Derby Nelsweep is ai bay colt by Sweeper II Lady Nell and was secured by Mr Kilmer at the time he acquired Sun Briair The colts dam Lady Nell is a young mare aind a half sister to Solid Comfort ai staike winner it two years old in 1910 The colt stairted only once hist season this being at Jamaica He received some injury in thait race which brought about his eairly retirement for the yeair He lias fully recovered and is now ais sound ais ever
