R L BAKERS NAME MENTIONED In Connection with Appointments to Kentucky State Racing Commission to Bo Made in May Louisville Ky February 15 Robert L Baker owner of Kingston Farm and one of the states most prominent turfmen whose name has been mentioned in connection with the appointments to the State Racing Commission to be made by Governor Stanley in May when the terms of the present five commissioners expire was a visitor to Churchill Downs today Mr linger took occasion to disclaim any rumor which niijht make it ap ¬ pear that lie is pressing his candidacy AAhile appreciating the distinction that would accrue to him and grateful for the friendly intentions of those who have interested themselves in his behalf he wishes it to be distinctly understood that their activities are not prompted by him The position is one of considerable responsibility and he would have to seriously consider any suggestions from the governors office Mr Baker is not declining an appointment before it is made but neither is he personally active in the matter matterThe The rumors that have been afloat for some time are in effect that all of the present members of the commission with the exceptional of T Hart Talbot of Bourbon County would be reappointed and that Mr Baker had been selected to fill Mr Talbots place From an authoritative source it is learned the name of Senator Thomas A Combs of Fayette County is one under consideration by the gov ¬ ernor who is known to hold the Lexington man in the highest esteem Senator Combs is demo ¬ cratic leader in the Senate is a breeder of thor ¬ oughbreds on a small scale and is the owner of a racing stable His appointment would be re ¬ garded as one of excellent augury for the for ¬ tunes of the turf turfRACING RACING PLANS OF BAKER STABLE STABLEAVhile AVhile in Louisville Mr Baker gave out some interesting information regarding his racing plans for the present year The stable that will be campaigned in charge of his brother Jack Baker will comprise fifteen bead of which four will be twoyearolds The older division will include the fiveyearold King Gorin the stables chief bread winner last season Pif Jr McAdoo Dr Carmen John Gund J C Stone Fair Orient Ernest B Tacola maidenAll Dr Levy and Cap a threeyearold maiden All of these horse are now in training at the Lexington track and will l e ready for the spring racing King Gorin has wintered splendidly and the stable expects big things from him himJohn John Guad and Pif Jr are also expected to show winning form this year The former did not start in a race last year due to a quarter crack that developed in the early spring springTacola Tacola and Dr Levy both threeyearolds have been nominated by their owner to the Kentucky Derby AAhile Mr Baker does not believe either of these colts can compare with some of the others that will be nominated he regards their prospects as fair Tacola is a chestnut colt by Transvaal Erla Lee and did not come to hand until the early summer He started five times of which he won two and was unplaced three times Dr Levy a chestnut colt by Marathon Attentive was also late in starting He won one race and was placed In two other races racesRegarding Regarding the future of Kingston Farm recently vacated by J AV Corrigan Mr Baker stated that he had received several offers from parties who desire to lease the place among the number being Emil Horz In the event that the farm is not leased this spring Mr Baker will devote a por ¬ tion of tin 350 acres to the cultivation of tobacco
