HIGHCLASS PERFORMANCES IN RACING OF THE BEST TWO YEAROLD FILLY IN LAST YEARS CAMPAIGN Some speedy twoyearold fillies were engaged in our racing last year but the consensus of opinion made out 11 P AVhitneys Itosie OGrady to be the best of them all ISy Hamburg Cherokee Itose II she AAas bred for speed and raced up to her breeding Her dam Cherokee Itose II is an elder sister of the fleet and highclass Futurity winner Pennant and was a fast one herself She AAas sent to England when u yearling and there won as a twoyearold in 1911 and as a threeyearold in 1913 The outbreak of the great war in 1911 sent her back to the land of her nativity along with her stable mates She AAas sent into stud life at once and ISosie OGrady was the result of her union with the grand racer and great broodmare sire Hamburg It was in accordance with the fitness of things that this daughter of his last years should prove able to brim Lrent credit to his mime mimeItosie Itosie OGrady made her debut in racing in a pin pinyearold yearold fillies at Helmont Park May 30 She was coin n ia iaite ite at 12 to Finishing with a great display of speed she passed Quietude in the last eighth and AAon by tAvo lengths in i 3 with Quietude second Enfilade third and seven others unplaced of which Mrs Trubbel AAas fourth This nice educated her for more important adventures So on June 2 she AAas sent to the post in the Fashion Stakes at fiveeighths of a mile It had rained and the track was sloAV Itoyal Ensign Masda Myrtlegale and Empress were her opponents She and Itoyal Ensign carried 112 pounds the others 109 She led all the way but only Avon by a neck from Itoyal Ensign in a hotly contested finish with the fleet Masda only another neck aAvay The nice was AAorth 4t0 net and the time was 101 Itoyal Ensign was the favorite at S to 5 Hosie OGrady being second choice at 14 to Her next start was in the Itosedale Stakes at Jamaica June 19 for which she was a great favorite at 4 to but being unluckily left at the post was pulled up and trotted in alone the race going to Enfilade Avith Itoyal Ensign second and Play Toy third thirdThe The good filly had better luck in her next essay This was in the Clover Stakes at fireeighths of a mile run at Aqueduct July 4 Under its conditions she had to take up 124 pounds and was i by Enfilade 119 Gold Tassel Play Toy Adeline Patricia Thistle Empress and Quietude 11 Mrs Trubbel Itose dOr The Wife and Oenone 109 each a representative band of fine and speedy fillies Making light of her heavy weight she soon raced into the lead anil making the pace hot won with ease by three lengths in 100 Avitli Enfilade second and Mrs Trubbel third Coupled in the betting Avith the latter she Aas at 9 to 10 in the betting convincing evidence that the racegoing public had elected her queen of her age and sx That was her last winning nice of the year but she AAas afterwards greater in adversity than she had shovn herself in victory As a matter of fact she should have AAOII her next race but Itobinson made an error of judgment in timing his final call on her too late and she lost by an inch or IAVO when in another stride she had poked her nose in front This was in the Demoiselle Stakes at Empire City July 19 the track being muddy and the distance five and a half furlongs She carried 12 pounds the others having up 113 or 109 pounds AVawbeek carrying 113 pounds slipped through on the inside in the stretch into a half length lead and held her advantage long enough to ultimately win by a scant nose witli Itosie OGrady second and Quietude a good third Time 109 and coupled Avith Mrs Trubbel Itosie OGrady was at 1 to ii in the betting bettingSo So far Uosie OGradys racing had been in competition with her OAVH sex but she AAas now taken to Saratoga to meet the sterner opposition of the good colts of the year Her first start there was in the Saratoga Special August 11 at threequarters of a mile The colt carried 122 pounds and the fillies 119 She and Enfilade representing the softer sex Tracksend AAas the favorite at 3 to 1 she being sec ¬ ond choice at 4 to 1 while 4X to I was laid against Sun ISriar and Papp Tho track was good but dull and not favorable to high speed displays Itosie OGrady took the lead at once and kept it to the last eighth where Sun Itrinr passed her witli a rush and AAon by a length and a half in 115 she beating Papp as far for second place The other starters Avert Drastic Nutcracker Enfilade El Plaudit Tracksend and Top Coat This good race was followed by another which she probably would have won but for getting off badly and being much knocked about in a big field This was in the twentysixth renewal of the Spinaway Stakes for fillies at five and a half furlongs in Avhich she carried 124 pounds T C McDoAAells speedy Olive Wood 112 pounds rinning by a length with Enfilade second Getting away next to last in a field of thirteen Itosie OGrady met Avith a series of impeding misadventures and did not secure a clear course until in the last eighth Then she came AAitli u superb rush into third place and running faster than the tAAo in front frontHer Her next start AAas in the most valuable race of the year the Hopeful Stakes at threequarters of a mile which AAas run over u heavy track and netted its winner 30600 The starters in this memorable race and their weights Avere Sun ISriur Papp and Lncullite 130 pounds Escoba 127 Happy Go Lucky 125 Itosie OGrady 124 Ultima Thule and The Spinner 119 War Cloud lllid Sycamoor Top Coat Debadou American Eagle lliighouse War Machine Frederick the Great Neppefhan and Arrah Go On 115 Sun Hriar was the post favorite at 13 to 5 with the Macomber entry second choice at 3 to 1 Itosie OGrady and Happy Go Lucky were coupled at 8 to 1 As it is AAell knovn to all conversant with the affairs of the turf this rich prize fell to Sun Uriur by u neck in a desperate struggle with Papp The outsider Sycamoor finished third a head in front of Itosie OGrady the latter was in the thick of the fray all the way and at one time being in the lead seemed to possess a fair chance of winning but finally tired in the exhausting stretch drive driveItosie Itosie OGradys last race of the year was in the Futurity at Itelinont Park Sentember 8 Papp Escoba Gold Tassel and Tracksend carried 120 pounds Itosie OGrady 124 Top Coat7 Itantry and War Machine 122 Itahu 119 Debadou and Chief Lally 117 and Itoyal Ensign lit Papp Avas a good favor ite at 11 to and an easy winner It was a muddy track that day and the threequarters straight AAas run in the sloAV time of 112 Escoba came from behind in the stretch Avith a rush and in a spirited struggle beat Itosie OGrady by a half length for second money moneyIn In her racing she clearly demonstrated her superiority to all the fillies she met and proved her ability to defeat the majority of the good colts of the year Sun Hriar and Pnpp had her measure but against all others she could hold her OAVII Most of her
