RACING AT EMPIRE CITY SATURDAY Summer Meeting of Sixteen Days Opens with Empire City Handicap as Feature FeatureNev Nev York July 10 The Empire Citv Racing As ¬ sociation will inaugurate its summer meeting of six ¬ teen days at Yonkers Saturday Judging from the pleasing and prosperous conditions that have pre ¬ vailed at Rclmont Park Jamaica and Aqueduct the meeting at Empire City should be the greatest in the history of that newest of Metropolitan courses Racing was never more popular than it is riht now striking testimony to that effect being seen in the large crowds that have witnessed the won ¬ derful sport over the eastern tracks this year With yearWith so many highclass horses now at their best the racing at Empire City should be even more spirited and interesting than that which preceded it Coming as it does immediately before the greit annual meeting at Saratoga Empire City will be the battle ground of a great many of the stars which will be put on edge for their Saratoga en ¬ gagements by actual test of competition at the Yonkers course Then again at Empire City the first clash of the year of the eastern and western horses will take place With the close of the Li tonia meeting Saturday all the big Kentucky establishments will move eastward and the majority of them will be found at Empire City before preced ¬ ing on to the Spa SpaThe The Empire City Racing Association has provided a program of unusu attractiveness aiid of suffi ¬ cient value to tempt any owner to send his best after the rich offerings For the opening day the Empire City Handicap of 5000 is the principal event with the Frivolity Stakes of QUO as a secondary feature A great field is assured for the Empire Citv Handicap with such noted racers as Ilonmcr Cudgel Omar Khayyam Westy Hogan Borrow Hendrie Spur Polymelian Tom McTaggart Papp Sun Brhir Hollistcr Ilanovia Damrosch Priseilla Mullens George Smith Hendrie and others eligible to start The startThe Frivolity Stakes is for twoyearolds under selling conditions and will undoubtedly brim to ¬ gether a big band of youngsters as this stake closed with over one hundred nominations nominationsAside Aside from the stake features on the opening day the overnight races will be well worth winning As a result of having on hand 3415 from surplus bids which the association received on the last two days of its 1917 meeting that amount will divided among the four overnight races or 85375 to each race That will make the purses in three of the races 145375 added and the other one 135775 added
