BILLY KELLY A CHAMPION Eastern Critics Concede that He ftlay Prove Best of Year Only Youngster Seen Thus Far FarAble Able to Pick Up His HisWeight Weight and Win J It Jeffery JefferySaratoga Saratoga X Y August 5 William F Poison was naturally elated after Hilly Kellys clearcut victory in the United States Hotel Stakes on Satur ¬ day lie was especially gratified that he hail had the courage to reject the offer of 30000 which Commander J K 1 IJoss hail made for the speedy son of Dick Welles Glena earlier in the day It was a tempting offer of course but Mr Poison figured that if the horse was wortli that much to KomelHidy else he ought to be to himself himselfBilly Billy Kelly is by no means prepossessing in ap jicarance One horseman of long experience de ¬ clared after his achievement of Saturday had brought him into such prominence that he was the most disappointing horse to look at in view of what he had accomplished so far in his career that lie had ever laid eyes upon Hut nanii jiomc is as handsome does and eastern critics who were not particularly impressed by his Flash Stakes victory on Thursday are now ready to concede that Jin may turn out to be the juvonilft champion of the yunr The thing that has impressed them most forcibly is that 1illy Kelly is the only youngster with championship pretentious they have sien this year that has been able to pick up his weight and win from the best opiKisition that could be mustered The general complaint about the twoyearolds that have been racing in the cast this year is that they have iKfii beating each other and that none has successfully stood the weight carrying test after being brought into the limelight as a prospective aspirant for the years honors Most of those that have IKCH mentioned at one time or another in con nection with the championship finished behind Billy Kelly iu his two victorious races here It is the general opinion that Billy Kelly is the best horse that Dick Welles a speed marvel of his day has sent to the races And Dick Welles has been well ited itedSOUND SOUND AND A PESFECT DISPOSITION DISPOSITIONHilly Hilly Kelly has that gift of so many horses of initstanding class a perfect disposition And he is also a sound horse His races all indicate that lie lias staying ability of no mean order as well as an abundance of speed His two successful races here would indicate that he is a stayer above all things for in Ixith of them lie came from behind with bulldog courage and strength after closely fol ¬ lowing fast early pacemakers and won going away indecisive fashion Trainer Perkins who Ixnight and developed the gelding for Poison is confident that he would IK an unbeaten horse today but for the1 unfortunate mishap which befell him while at the iwist for the Spring Trial Stakes at Douglas Park and which prevented him from running his race Perkins has o much faith in the prowess of his charge that he will dodge none of his engagements here provided the gelding retains his BOOI form That he is not eligible for the 30000 Hopeful Stakes is merely a matter of adverse luck The nominations for this prize were made before his quality had been disclosed even to his trainer and so other juveniles from the Poison stable that had been showing up somewhat better in their work were given the preference over him in the selection of entries for this particular race raceIt It was by the merest chance that Mr Poison who operates a factory at Buffalo devoted to the manufacture of airplane parts became interested iu racing and eventually became the owner of a racing stable Two years ago while on a vacation triii with Mrs Poison iu Canada he chanced to visit the Ottawa track while racing was in progress and at once became intensely interested in the hport Later that season he visited other Canadian tracks when his business affairs would permit it and by fall he decided to buy a horse or two which he turned over to G E Chancellor to race for him Last year he transferred his horses to the care of their present trainer and upon achieving some slight success at once added to its strength e purchase of several horses including a num ¬ ber of twuyearohls of which Hilly Kelly was one all selected by trainer Perkins The liresent strength of the Poison stable is twenty head including eight twoyearolds Aside from Hilly Kelly the good sprinter Hasil is the most notable of the Poison horses but others of the stable have been racing with distinction in the selling plater division divisionIr Ir Poison has as yet bought no yearlings with which to participate in the twoyearold racing of next year
