DempseySaratoga Saratoga N Y August 8 The old established Alabama Stakes for threeyearold fillies over the mile and a quarter distance which had its initial running in 1872 and has with the exception of four years had its decision annually and includes in its list of winners many notable stars that have con ¬ tributed to American turf history was the outstand ¬ ing feature of todays card and only had four start ¬ ers although the winners portion of the stakes amounted to 5575 5575A A L Astes Eyelid a daughter of Eyebrow Kaimcnt ridden by L Ensor and carrying one run dred and seventeen pounds was returned an easy winner in it from M L Schwartz Enfilade with Ballymooney in third place Opinion as to the out ¬ come centered strictly between Eyelid and Enfilade each having about an even division of the big throng with Enfilade a small favorite near the close While maneuvering at the barrier Bally inooney kicked viciously at Enfilade but the pair were so close together at the time that the blow did notJandSwithfuH force ancleaused nodamage When they were dispatched Enfilade had an ad ¬ vantage with Eyelid last to leave the barrier Enfilade was at once rushed into a good lead with Ballymooney her closest follower and Eyelid well back until the half mile post was reached where Ensor suddenly sot busy with the Aste filly and wrested the lead from Enfilade in a flash The last quarter of the race found Eyelid well established in the lead going easily while Enfilade was begin ¬ ning to lag and having to be hard ridden The last sixteenth found them in straggling order Eyelid ultimately winning as her rider pleased br five lengths with Enfilade ten lengths befoi Ballymooney and Daytoria far back Prior to the nice George Smith owner of the Bri tried to buy the winner but the sale was not consummated on account of the filly failing to pass a veterinary examination to Mr Smiths satis ¬ faction it was said saidOLD OLD ESTABLISHED SARATOGA FEATURE FEATUREThe The Alabama Torchbearer Withdrawals reduced the field to four starters with Hank ODay and Wise Man those most in favor Hank ODay showed the others tha way until Thurber called on Franklin when lie moved up with a rush from last place and wrested away the lead to hold Hank ODay safe through the last eighth It was the first time that Franklin had been run in a selling race and after his victory lie drew W C Weants attention he bidding him up from an entered price of 2000 to 3 105 but the horse was retained with an advance of 5 5Capt Capt Kal Parrs colors were again carried to vic ¬ tory and this time not
