STEEPLECHASING THIS FALL IN FRANCE According to present appearances owners trainers and riders of jumpers in France will be much better off in the near future than their confreres on this side of the channel unless our government sees cause to reconsider its embargo on racing under N II Hides From October o to Novenil er 150 there are to be twelve days steeplechasini and hurdle racing at MaisonsLaffitte The Societe des Steeplechases de France has lost no time in publish ¬ ing complete programs for the whole series the races varying in value from 100 sovereigns to nearly 300 sovereigns apiece On the opening day there are to be four hurdle races and a steeplechase all of which except a selling affair over hurdles an con ¬ fined to horses foaled and reared in France Similar conditions prevail with respect to later events The racing will be as heretofore of the test order which however is imiMssible in this country for there is no state aid here and no wealth societies to offer such a sum as 10000 sovereigns as is brinj done in France for the encouragement of obstacl r racing by the Societe des Steeplechases Iuudou Sportsman
