LATEST TURF GOSSIP FROM LATONIA Track in Better Condition than Ever Before No letup in Training Operations OperationsCincinnati Cincinnati O October 10 With the openfnc of the Lsitonia meeting definitely deferred until Thurs ¬ day of next week the horsemen whose stables sire quartered at the picturesque home of the Latonia Jockey Club snnid the hills of northern Kentucky sire devoting themselves to the preparation of their horses for the revised schedule under which the races will be run They are one and all exerting themselves to have the full strength of their estab ¬ lishments ready to take part in the sport imme ¬ diately the season opens and this will be a factor in styleThe starting the meeting off in exceptional style The workouts that have been taking place since the arrival of the horses that rsieed sit Louisville last week bear out the sissertion of Track Sui er intendent Nolte that the Lsitonia course will lie faster and safer than ever sis a result of the re ¬ surfacing to which it wsis treated during the sum ¬ mer The horsemen are a unit in declaring that the course is in much better condition than it was for the spring meeting While not in the least cuppy it is now equipped with n splendid cushion and all the inequalities in the surface which ex ¬ isted when the summer meeting closed have dis ¬ appeared appearedDuring During the past few days there have been a num ¬ ber of speedy workouts O T Worthingtons good filly Vivsi America went a mile with ease in 140 George J Ixmgs greatly improved three yearold Freecutter is credited with having gone the same distance in 140 silid J H Hespess unbeaten Last Coin cantered si mile in 141 The first named two sire simong the prominent candi ¬ dates for the Latouia Autumn Insiugursil Handicsip and lx th silt counted as certain starters in that race The rejuvenated Last Coin is expected to figure prominently in the overnight racing at La ¬ tonia and it is probable that he will take part in races at one mile and over as well as at the shorter distances to which his efforts have so far been confined before the meeting is over Good judges look for him to distinguish himself at the longer distances quite as much as he has in sprint LOOK FOR NEW MIEE RECORD RECORDIt It is quite within the possibilities that the ap ¬ proaching meeting may result in the creation of a new track record for one mile with the track in such improved condition as it seemingly is The present track record is 137 and stands to the credit of George M Hendries Great Britain which good horse made the mark with 114 pounds up on June 15 1914 It is the opinion of competent judges that a high class horse would run a mile in 137 over the track in its present ondition onditionThe The sensational victory of Willis Sharpe Kilmers threeyearold Exterminator over such cracks as Tim Porler and Sunny Slope at Laurel Tuesday will entail tlie licking up of a penalty of three pounds by that colt if lie is sent west to engage in the Latonia Autumn Inaugural Handicap of which trainer Henry McDaniel evidently entertained some intention in view of his act in telegraphing here for si list of the weights for tlie race If he comes west the winner of tlie Kentucky Derby will be required to csirry 115 pounds in the Inaugural next week weekJ J B Respess was the victim of a bit of racing misfortune today when his useful threeyearold filly Angelina broke down so badly while sit work hat even so skillful a man with cripples as Res ¬ pess lis shown himself to l e declared that her case vas hopeless so far as further rsicing is concerned She will IK saved for breeding purposes and will us forthwith retired to tlie Respess stud sit Krlanger sumo dozen miles from the Latonia track
