IGNOMINIOUS END OF A GREAT RACER One of Americas Turf Stars of a Decade Ago Fin ¬ ishes His Days Pulling a Cab Banquet by Rayon dOr Ella T one of the best American race horses of twentyfive years ago second in the Suburban and winner in a long list of successful races of the Expectation Stakes Stockton Stevens and Speculation Stakes Mon nioiith Country Club Fort Schnyler Hudson River Knickerbocker Naveslnk New York and Manhattan Handicaps came to an ignominious end pulling a hansom cab in the streets of London Bred by Hon W L Scott of Erie Pa he raced for him as a twoyearold and threeyearold and then was sold to Dwyer Bros It was when a threeyearold that he made the record over a straight course of a mile and a quarter in 203 then thought im ¬ possible time over any description of track This was when he defeated Tournament and Sir John in the Stockton Stakes at Monmouth Park July 17 1890 1890Like Like many of the Rayon dOrs Banquet was a hardy and enduring campaigner and was seven years old when with 110 pounds up he ran second to Ramapo in the Suburban of 1894 in 205 it being the fastest run Suburban to that date He was good enough that yeir to win the First Special Hudson River Woodlands and Yonkers Handicaps and six more races besides finishing second fight times and third twice out of twenty three races a remarkable record for a horse of his age ageMike Mike Dwyer wont over to England in 1895 to despoil the English bookmakers and came home despoiled Banquet was one of the horses taken across and about the only one that met expecta ¬ tions He was raced in selling races at much below his value after the American style and al ¬ ways heavily backed Retaliation followed and it cost lUvyer 11053 to protect and retain him in two races that he won Running second in a race at Newmarket he was claimed by Charles Archer brother of the famous jockey Fred Archer Two races later at Gatwick Banquet was claimed from Archer by Captain J E Atkin for 3500 After that year Banquet did not win a race and after passing through several ownerships drifted out of sight to an ignominious vocation His long and eventful career produced this record recordBanquet Banquet b g by Rayon dOr Ella T Year Ago Sts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won 1889 2 12 1 5 8920 1890 3 20 4 7 21535 1891 4 40 15 6 201535 1892 5 28 14 5 22080 1893 28 14 4 16510 1894 7 23 10 3 21830 1895 8 9 4 41S95 4 6925 1S95 9 r 0 1897 10 Did no no1S9S not race 1S9S 11 1 100 0 Totals 10 42 23 39 118535
