ENGLANDS LEADING JOCKEY Stephen Donoglmc who has been the leading jockey in England the last five years is anlrish niun though born in England at Warrington Lan ¬ cashire in 1883 He can still ride at about 10 pounds Donogiiue began by spending some time under an English trainer in a French stabls at Chautilly and then went to live in Ireland where he did pretty well Mr Atty Persse eventually pcrsiiaftrd Donoghue to come and ride in England and he took up the post of first jockey for the Chattis Hill Stable at Stockbridge since when he has never looked back His first winner in England was Sir George Murrays Corridor in the Elvaston Castle Plate at Derby on Friday April 19 1911 in which year he rode forty other winners In 1913 he lode seventyeight winners and the following year was at the top of the tree witli one hundred and twentynine victories There lie has remained ever since coming out in 1915 with sixtytwo winners in 191t with fortythree win ¬ ners in 1917 with fortytwo winners and last year he had sixtysix winners to his credit This record is exclusive of those he achieved in Ire ¬ land or South Africa In 1917 Alfred POX secured first claim ou the services of Dohoghue at n retainer of 7500 which arrangement was con ¬ tinued last year and the same gentleman Uas the option once again for 1919
