ORESTES WINS IN SENSATIONAL STYLE Scnor A. H. Diaz Tracery Colt Captures Moro Castle Handicap Before Big Crowd at Oriental Park. HAVANA. Cuba, Januaty 20. Senor A. H. Diaz Tracery Kildouan colt Orestes brought a vast throng to their feet in the grandstand at Oriental. Park tlds afternoon in a frenzy of excitement when he came from last place in the run through the homestretch and got up in the final strides to win the Moro Castle Handicap this afternoon. It was a. dash of three-quarters of a mile, witli a purse of .,200 added by the association, and brought out a field of fast snrinters. Among the fastest horses on the ground, "Orestes was an equal favorite with Sedan and was ridden by jockey Willie knapp. AVhen the start came Orestes was slow to get into his stride and was badly outrun in the early stages. As u distant trailer he looked hopelessly out of It. but Knapp understood the horse, however, and never made a move until entering the homestretch, where lie took the colt on the outside of the others, where he sat down to ride. Orestes responded with a startling burst of speed, wearing down the leaders, which lie caught and passed in the last twenty yards and winning going away. The pace was fast all the way, the fractional time being 23, 454 and 1:11, equaling llie track record. An additional attraction was tin General Pershing Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth with 800 added. There were seven starters, M. Lowensteins much improved deck beating a good band in runaway fashion. He was tiring at the end and beat Tetley by half a lensth. It was the third successive victory for Cleek this meeting. The program offered by llie association was one of the best of the meeting. The management added ,700 to the various purses. The attendance was large and the sport was thoroughly enjoyed. Society was out in full force and all the boxes were filled with Havanas elite.
