BE FRANKS GREAT VICTORY Takes the Latonia Derby in a Canter with Omond Next Kegalo Holds a Brief Lead but butFinishes Finishes Third Eternal Quits Quitsat at a Mile and a Quarter LATONIA Kv June 7 All former records of attendance at Latonia were shattered this afternoon The attendance consisted of by far the largest number that ever visited the course and the total of speculation was proportionately increased At least 2000 more programs were sold than on any former day The clubhouse contingent was espe ¬ cially numerous and comprised some of the most prominent persons in Cincinnati and vicinity While the foreign representation was not as large as that on hand at Churchill Downs to view the Kentucky Derby still in the big throng noticed this afternoon were persons from many sections of the country The contingent from Chicago was particularly no ¬ ticeable and large New York also had quite a representation witli St Louis Memphis New Or ¬ leans and even Texas points sending a fair share of visitors visitorsWith With all the provision made in the betting pa ¬ vilion to handle the big betting1 cxpeditiously there still ensued congestion and much money was shut nut in some cases because of the inadequate facili ¬ ties tiesThe The pavilion was a seething jam throughout the afternoon afternoonEvery Every available inch of space in the grandstand was occupied and the overflow found vantage points on the lawns and the space reaching from the clubhouHc to the paddock a distance of nearly n quarter of a mile was congested with people eager 4tbget Ji glimpse of the racing The opening races while productive of splendid contests despite the heavy track served only as appetizers for the big feature and the call of the horses to the post in the Derby was awaited with much impatience impatienceHOW HOW THE DERBY WAS BUN BUNMoving Moving along with a free swinging stride and seemingly iincxtcndcd Be Frank the unsexed son of Sir John Johnson Frankness carrying the colors of C M Garrison and ridden by Kummcr who came here also from the cast landed the Latonia Derby five lengths before Omond an outsider with Regalo in third place and Vulcanite following five lengths away the favorite Eternal following and having shot his bolt after showing the others the way to the last quarter of the trying niile and a half There was not the slightest doubt as to Be Franks superiorly this afternoon particularly in such going as prevailed He was always well up though racing a trifle wide But it gave him a clear course for the entire race and when his rider called on him for the final effort he ran away from the others with the utmost ease Regalo at first essayed to give him what looked might result in a hard battle but the last eighth found him still contin ¬ uing his giant sweeping stride and it carried him steadily away from Regalo in tlie last sixteenth and left him free of danger from the others Omond coming with a fine rush at the end overhauled Regalo in the last fifty yards for second place placeThe The public had more confidence in Eternal than his owner and made him an overwhelming choice and he flattered his backers for a mile and a quarter Then he tired fast and Schuttinger eased him up when he found the task hopeless His re ¬ tirement gave Regalo the lead momentarily but Be Frank overhauled her in a twinkling and from the stretch turn to the finish it required only a canter on his part to hold the race safe On his showing today it is patent that Eternal does not run well on a heavy track trackThe The victory of Be Frank was a popular one judging by the acclaim with which he was hailed on his return to tlie scales scalesTlie Tlie usual aftermath of a Derby consisting of presenting flowers to the owner and jockey and congratulations by officials and presentation by some dignitary followed On this occusion Mayor Craig of Covlngton made the presentation speech to owner Garrison GarrisonBEAVERKIIX BEAVERKIIX WINS EASY VICTORY VICTORYThe The heavy rain during the night which converted the course into u deep sticky strip was respon ¬ sible for many withdrawals from the different dashes and the secondary features that surrounded the principal race suffered extensively The 2000 mile and a sixteenth handicap left only three start ¬ ers when the blue pencil ceased operating and it furnished an easy victory for Beaverklll which won as his rider pleased from Viva America AmericaJoin Join W Schorrs Jas T Clark furnished an upset when he won the threequarters handicap from Top Coat and Looking Up The trio were in Hose order at the finish and but for Looking Ups failure to come faster in the earlier running she would have been the winner winnerBlaisc Blaisc scored a nose victory in the opening race over Star Baby and Marjorie Hynes had an easy time of it in the second race The third was an interesting duel between Toto and American Ace with the latter the winner by a short margin marginFirst First money
