Inu, January 17.— A raring eard of exceptional merit was provided today for patrons of the Fair Hrounds. and coupled with the halmy weather it served to firing out the full racing quota, in the-- part-, augmented by many holiday visitors. The headline r of the card was a handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, in which six accepted, with Chief, a consistent performer, conceding weight to the others, but this did not deter him from being installed favorite, and he rewarded the confidence by winning in impressive fashion and as his rider pleased. Mistress Ioliy landed in -econd place, closely pursued by Wood trap. The winner allowed Panamas to make the running on -uffcreiice until reaching the stretch, where Ambrose freed hint from restraint, and Chief came away to win hard held. Qmond, which was a storm center because ..f hi- unexpected victory in hi- la-f start, again figured in an aerolalic performance when he landed in last place iii ihis race. The outstanding up-et of the meeting and bringing in the first 101 to 1 winner in years here came with the running of the final race when Almino crossed tin- finish in advance of Baby Sister and Lottery. What made Almino- victory more out --landing w.i- the fact that Riebcreek kept him next to the inner rail for the entile race. Rapid Traveler- defeat in the -econd race at a prohibitive price was a hefty jolt for form backers. The winner turned up in Minute Man. which in a preceding race while at a short price succumbed readily to The Boy. WHITNEY YOUNGSTER WINS. The II. V . Whitney colors triumphed in the initial race when Loyal Sweeper led the others home, Buddie Keaa taking -econd place and Whippet. a stable companion of Loyal Sweeper, finishing third. Lands Rnd, said to be the best in Edward Cebriana stable, was given confident sunqwrt in this, but met interference al the start ami again in the hi-t eighth from Whippet, which caused him to be al over the track and he brought up Unplaced. Thane who observed the Incompetent ride that Donahue gave Tantalus in his last race profited handsomely this afternoon, for they supported him loyally and he made gi oil nfter a well sustained drive to dispose of X. K. Ileal in the -ixth race Simpleton, with his light weight, was supported extensively in the fifth race, but he just iliif manage to outstay Bolster after a -pirited drive by the pair. Rxteanive Improvements are being made at the Jefferson Park race course in preparation for the spring meeting and especially with a view of accommodating the a-t throng expected when the Louisiana Derby ha- its first running. The main entrance i- to be changed. It will be placed at the side of the paddock. II i- expected this will add lo the convenience of all the patron-, whether they go to the course by train, trolley, or motor. A bleacher with a good seating capacity is also to be constructed.
