CANDIDATE FOR DERBY HONORS ONE OF THE WHITNEY CRACKS JOHN P GRIER CONSID ¬ ERED ON THE BASIS OF AN ANALYSIS OF THE ELEMENTS SHOWN IN HIS ANCESTRY By EXILE EXILEForecasting Forecasting tin1 winner of tlio Kentucky Derby soino six weeks prior to tlio running of the race is not quite such in impossible tisk as sonic would have it supposed especially if proper consideration be given to tin milliner of tlie breeding of those engaged 1or throe years in succession lung prior to the Into sot for tin running of tlie nice I was so fortunate as to spot tlie winner and tliese were Regret George Smith and Omar Khayyam In 11I1S I managed to entirely overlook Exterminator and last year yeartold told there was lint scant chance of the colts seeing the post Of course the great majority of those engaged in the fascinating ami frequently elusive pursuit of horse breeding will have it then is no virtue in blending the Mood of Herod Matchcm and Eclipse but to nil tliese I say and say positively that turf history is proof to the contrary and that only two really in ¬ fluential horses Hampton and Isonomy are not broil on this plan of mating By best horses be it under ¬ stood those capable of winning over the Derby distance or Cup route under scale weight and which in after life attain to distinction as sires As for juvenile winners the carefully kept records of a stud book are of no assistance in their production If there is nothing in the blending of tin blood plan of mating how conies it that Sir Parton a really lirstclass threeyearold the best of his year and winner of last years Kentucky Derby was sired by the Kclipse horse Star Shoot from the Herod mare Lady Sterling by Hanover Tin previous winner that honest campaigner Kxterminator is bred on a like plan of matin his sire the Kclipse horse MiGee and his dam Fair Kmpress by lim Core son of Hindoo Omar Khayyam is a son of the Matohcni sire Marco and his dam Lisma a daughter of the Eclipse horse Per ¬ simmon George Smith is by the all Kclipse sire of Out of Roach his dam Consuolo II by the Matchcm horse Rradwardino and his granddam Miss Pepper a daughter of the Herod sire Pepper and Salt And all of these but Kxterminator well worth while for after use as sires Well do I know the desirability of speedy juvenile form in actual contest or otherwise but I also insist that some are bred to improve on anything they may have shown as twoyearolds Immediate racing success is not by any anymeans means the only thine to In thought of in bl Istock breeding It is only tlie wellbred ones which are arewortli wortli a straw for after use as sires or brood mares and Uss Wj odfrinL was most Ufcoly lut t iier in part obscure brooding broodingDerby Derby day will soon again be with us It may not therefore prove uninteresting to see how some of the most capable of those engaged are bred and if possible pick the winner once more as judged on his breeding as well as his twoyearold performances performancesOf Of the one hundred and seven entries received for this years Kentucky Derby there are a number which exhibited really good racing form as youngsters and probably it is from these that the winner will come There may be of course a sleeper one which from any cause could not be sent to the post last year such a one as Commander Koss Uoyal Jester a really wellbred son of the St Logor winner Black Jester and Primula by St Denis Sir Barton was a maiden remember last year when he went to the post for Kentuckys biggest race and history sometimes repeats itself Royal Jesters pedigree will be dealt with later along The best of those entered as judged on past performances and their breeding are the colts Angon Kapiil Traveler St Allan ICluc Wrack Dominique Golden Ilrooin Kinnoul Donua cona On Watch ViceChairman High Command Blazes Paul Jones Peace Pennant Sam Freodman Kaisan Dore Prince Pal Damask John P Grier Leviathan and tlie lillies Constancy Miss Jemima Cleo ¬ patra Lorraine Cobwebs and Afternoon AfternoonThis This time more so than ever would it appear condition will play an important part in the decision of the race due of course to the inclement weather of tin past few mouths and tlie backward condition of the horses in the eastern and middle states Not one of those mentioned above could be classed in the same street with Man o War but Man o Wars name is missing from the list of Kentucky Derby eligi bles which gives to the race a far more open look Already the breeding of one of Mr Whitneys eli gibles Damask lias been considered and I shall now take up the performances and breeding of another pair of the New York turfmans entries John P Grier and Leviathan LeviathanRacing Racing last August at Saratoga I witnessed John P Griers lirst effort in public a race in which he met defeat after a most erratic course but at the time made a mental note that John had in him the makings of a good horse and on looking up his breeding found he was also bred to race Following his Saratoga discomfiture John P Grier won a couple of races at Relmont Park and also ran a most credita ¬ ble second to Man o War in the Futurity finishing lengths ahead uf Dominique and Cleopatra Only once more last autumn were the public permitted to see John P Grier in action and this at Laurel where with all ease lie accounted for his two opponents Smart Guy and Kapid Traveler TravelerJohn John P Grier presents an attractive pedigree one indicative of a high order of speed Whisk Broom II his sire after meeting with more than customary success as a race horse in England was returned to this country and succeeded in performing the hitherto unheard of feat of winning all of the throe major eastern handicaps Whisk Itroom II is a member of via Pi mstick the reliable house of Itonnie Scot ¬ land and his dam Audience an Oaks winning daughter of Sir Dixon which is a member as is Whisk Itroom himself of tlie best winner producing line there is that of Maggie P I by Australian ITp to the present however many members of this line with the exception of Sir Dixon have been tried as sires and found wanting wantingEven Even the Derby winner Iroqnois scored only a partial success as a sire and it remains to be seen what fate holds In store for the latest aspirant to stallions honors Whisk Ilrooin II IIWonder Wonder dam of John P Grier is a daughter of The Jockey Club Stakes winner Disguise which despite his twenty throe years is as fresh as paint at Wikiup and good I trust for some time yet to come I have always held to the opinion that daughters of Disguise are destined for success as brood mares His Alarm Galopin Voting Melbourne Queen Mary combination indicates this Wonders dam Curiosity is also the dam of the Futurity winner Novelty and is by that fast horse Voter whose dam Mavourneen is by that good brood mare sire Itarcaldine Curiosity is half sister to the Futurity win ¬ ner and leading brood mare sire of 11S Sweep and their dam is Pink Domino by Domino What about this double dose of Domino so outstanding in the makeup of a probable Derby starter For my part I should have been quite content with i single shot and in addition to this there is the fact of Whisk Ilrooin IIs being a member of a line the success of whose male members as sires is by no means certain I therefore doubt the ability of John P Grier to duplicate in Mr Whitneys colors the performance of Regret in 1015 j Ponnie Scotland 10 K ltrushMW 1 Ivy I af M J of or m 14 K KMW Broomstick Albia MW K bay PJIM Galopin 3 K Mavis III II 1 Ilonil Or 1 K St Kditha 1 II o j Voltigenr 2 K
