TWO CRACK DERBY CANDIDATES LINES OF ANCESTRY OF THE FORMIDABLE G W LOFT LOFTELIGIBLES ELIGIBLES DONNACONA AND ON WATCH NOW NOWIN IN ACTIVE TRAINING AT CHURCHILL DOWNS As Kentucky Derby day will soon IK upon ns I last Tuesday paid a flying visit to Louisville for the purpose if possible of having a look over the Derby horses now quartered there Tuesday night found many trainers of prominence foregathered in the Seelbach paddock among them Max Hirsch William Wallace George Odoin Mose Goldblatt William Martin Ham Keene and others which are just the ad ¬ vance guard of the main forces expected during the course of the next few days daysThe The first Derby candidate to catch my eye Wednesday morning was the Louisiana success Damask which under the capable tuition of Mose Goldblatt has well fulfilled his last autumns Pimlico promise A really good level made brown is Damask the cut of one well able to withstand hard knocks which come with a severe course of training You cannot miss him an all brown colt except for a tiny china white star in his forehead Damask has none of the appearance of a New Orleanser is as fresh as paint though quiet and docile and 1 tell you Damask is dangerous It is only a few days since his pedigree appeared in Daily Itacing Form so I shall pass on to Max Hirschs pair Donnacona and On Watch WatchIn In company with Commissioner Keene I walked across tin center Held to note the stand extension which is now well under way in view of affording better and more spacious accommodation for specta ¬ tors Commendable this but I am sorry to say it has only been done at the expense of a still further encroachment on the already limited area of the paddock Fact is room and still more room is the one thing necessary at Churchill Downs On returning Mr Keene and I were lucky enough to run across Mr Hirsch and his pair of Derby horses standing at attention after their canter and both of them all the better for their spin of Monday MondayDonnaeona Donnaeona ever since I first saw him at Saratoga last August has always been a pal patterned much on the ordrr of his sire both in color and conformation the best horse I ever saw race Prince Palatine A bright bay smooth turned hip straight hind leg short though well set on tail as had his wKn racing strong back deep of heart wellplaced shoulders stout neck oil hind pastern white a Rnip oF white in Rio the off front heel a tritie stringht inrfrontTit is true and his head though forceful and determined not quite so pleasing as that of his sire his ears just a fraction down oil his head but yon will know him by the heartshaped star in his forehead and just about lifteenthree Donnacona is a well setup colt and due whose form last year was distinctly good I feel certain he will improve lirst Illcause of his summers sickness and also because he is bred to d so All lethargy this spring has vanished and Donnacona is himself again and of this his feelings sutlicieiit evidence evidenceFrom From my point of view the victory of Donnacona would be one of the best things possible for the bloodstock breeding interests of this country from the fact that he is the bestbred horse for use as a sire engaged in the race raceAs As to condition Donnacona does not as yet present quite that hi uing appearance characteristic of ofhorses horses wintered farther to the south His winters coat is slipping It will however require the ex ¬ ercise of every ounce of trainer Max Hirschs skill and every ray of Kentucky sunshine to bring Donna coua to his best by Derby day AVby do I write Donnacona down as the bestbred horse in the race Pecause of the fact that he is a son of the master Persimmon and a son of Verwoods dam Kildonan by Ladas Lochnell by the Matchem sire 1 area Id inc sire of the dams of Perth Macdonald Malster Sain and Voter and besides Donnacona is a member of the Agnes family to which trace such equine celebri ¬ ties as the peerless Sceptre the French phenomenon Sardanapalc the horse of the century Ormonde Iroomstick St Gaticn Martagon Desmond and I dont know how many more of the topclass horses of recent times Donnacona strange to say is in his top crosses bred in precisely the same manner as is ishis his grandsire Persimmon Poth of tl of Galopin descend in the male line their lams Hampton and andgranddams granddams by sires of MelbonrneMatchem descent Yes indeed it would be a big thing for the blood ¬ stock breeding interests of this country should Dinnacona emerge triumphant from the coming contest and for mv part I only hope he may Aedette Flying is I think just a trine more advanced in condition than his stablcmate but hi is not and never has been a work horse A big one surely a hard brown rather a chicken head and startled expression well placed shoulders exceptionally deep of heart pacing horse rump plenty of length and rangy none too much bone but a winner tried and true If Colin sire of On AVatch is to attain to any real distinction as a sire 1 hope the happy combination in breeding may soon be found for as yet the success as a sire of the undefeated has only been rather sketchy No one disputes Colins ability as a race horse but his success as a sire is still undetermined Collin himself is put up rather on the effeminate pattern none too much bone himself a taking horse in appearance he appears rather to lack that masculinity so noticeable in the makeup of the best of the stallions Colin however if bred to coarse Melbourne type mares might still score a big success successOne One thing the backward condition of the eastern horses suggests is a change of date for the ruuning of the Kentucky Derby Man is but a creature of habit anyway and customs die hard but a change might be made with advantage to a later date for the decision of Kentuckys Kst early spring race The quick and hurried preparation now necessary has tolled the death knell has sealed the fate of many an otherwise good horse Climatic conditions are such and not to be remedied here thatiit is next tiling Continued on second page TWO CRACK DERBY CANDIDATES Continued from first page to impossible to properly lit horses north of the thirtysix or
