WINNER OF FIRST KENTUCKY DERBY Aristides Was Bred at McGrathiana Stud and First Raced at lexincton His Racing Exploits Aristides by Leamington was bred by the late II P McGrath of McGrathiana Stud near Lex I ington Ky Foaled in the spring of 1872 his dam Sarong was by Ixxington Greek Slave by Glen coe Aristides commenced his turf career at Lex ¬ ington Ky by running second to Leona in a sweepstakes for twoyearolds half mile in 4 was unplaced In Juvenile Stakes half mile at Jerome Park won by Meeo in 5ii at Monmouth Park was unplaced in tin Hopeful Stakes half mile won by Caroline in 51 was second to Sweet lips in the Thespian Stakes same place three quarters of a mile in 11S At Saratoga was un ¬ placed in the Sar yoga Stakes threequarters of a mile won by AVillie Burke in l23i track heavy Same place won a handicap purse one mile with ninetysis pounds in l10Vi defeating a band of five Jerome Park fall meeting ran second to James A for club purse threequarters of a mile in 11S four others behind him Baltimore Md won club purse for twoyearolds one mile in 144 Ti carrying 100 pounds the best race made by a twoyearold to that date As a threeyearold he started nine times and won four races Was unplaced in Phoenix Hotel Stakes one mile and an eighth won by Ten Broeck in 2lli track muddy Louisville Ky won the Kentucky Derby one and a half miles KM pounds on each in 237i In this race he beat Aolcano Aerdigris Bob Wool ley Ten Broeck and ten others including Searcher Pill Bruce and McCreery Jerome Park won HIL Withers Stakes one mile 111 pounds in 1 beating Rhadamanthns Ozark and ten others othersSame Same place ran second to his stabe companion Calvin which MiGrath had backed heavily in the Belmont Stakes one and a half miles in 2I2 Milner Ozark Tom Ochiltree and nine others behind him Monmonth Park ran second to Ozark in the Ocean Hotel Stakes one and threequarter miles ill 10 Saratoga was second to DArtagnan and Milner in the Travels Stakes one and threequarter miles in 5 li i each carrying 110 pounds thr fastest race run with the weights to that date Jerome Park fall meeting won the Jerome Stakes two miles in 43 beating Calvin Joe Cerns and five others Baltimore was unplaced in the Dixie Stakes two miles won by Tom Ochiltree in 342 with Aiator second weights 110 pounds Same place won the Breckenridge Stakes two miles in 33 33i i Aiator second Tern Ochiltree third he carrying 115 pounds to 111 pounds on the others As a fouryearold started in and won two races both run at I xington Ky AVon a sweepstakes for fouryearolds two miles and an eighth in 54v beating Ten Broeck each carrying 104 pounds This was the fastest race ever run at the distance and so remained until beaten by Monitor at Baltimore October 2O lSSll then four years old with 11 pounds ran the distance in 344 i AVon club purse two and a half miles 101 pounds in 427 the fastest race ever run at the distance beating Bazar Elemi and War Jig lie ran only one other race one and a half miles won by Ten Broeck in 24S in which he was unplaced having bad legs from splints
