KENTUCKY DERBY Twenty Two Colts and Fillies Named to Contest Todays Rich Race Over a aTrack Track Probably in Favor of Mud Runners Circumstances surroundings rules and in some ways customs differ widely from those of that bright day fortysix years ago when the first Kentucky Derby was run Then the track was new and raw the buildings plain as was the custom of the time and possibly live thousand people may have been present Now the Churchill Cowns appointments are of the most modern and commodious description the track beaten into perfect condition by the impact of thousands of pattering hoofbeats through the years and possibly ten times as many spectators will acclaim this years victor as cheered the triumph of the Little Red Horse in far away 1875 But in each case then and now the underlying motive for the assemblage was and will be the same to do homage to the matchless qualities of the gallant thoroughbred That first race was as full of exciting incidents and vas contested by a field equal to any which followed it Price McGrath owner of McGrathiana Stud Farm and as true a descendant of Brian Boru as ever came to America had three remarkably good threeyearolds in Aristides Calvin and Chesapeake Owner trainer and jockey Bob Swim all held Chesapeake to be the pick of the trio whereas the stern test of the race track proved him the inferior one So Robert Swim rode Chesapeake and a small colored lad named Lewis rode Aristides his special mission being to send Aristides into the lead to make the pace fast for his preferred stablemate This he did and so effectually that he led to the end and had Chesapeake as scant of breath as the other beaten toilers behind him the great racer and recordmaker Ten Broeck being one of the unplaced victims of his speed and endurance enduranceAristides Aristides was a son of Leamington and that wonderful sire has exercised a greater influence in the decision of the Kentucky Derby than any other stallion His male line descendants which have won the now big race are Aristides Leonatus Spokane Riley Azra Chant Lieutenant Gib ¬ son His Eminence Sir Hiton Pink Star and Stone Street Unfortunately the influence of Leamington is attenuated today but nothing can deprive him of this unmatched record to the credit of his line which is not beyond the possibility of a revival revivalThe The Derby of this year has the greatest entry list awarded it since 1912 but that years was not the largest in its history In 1898 when Plaudit won it had 179 nominations But there is every prospect that numerically itsrecord field is to go to the post this year This has been apparent since it became positive that Man o War was not to be a contestant for its laurels On the form of last years records the race was mani ¬ festly of such an open nature as to encourage any owner of a fairly good threeyearold to think he had a chance and to take it This rather pleas ¬ ing state of uncertainty has been confirmed and added to by the sometimes unexpected results of races this spring in which Derby eligibles have been participants There is nothing objectionable about this The Kentucky Derby of this and succeeding years is now of a value fairly rivaling that of the world renowned Epsom Derby The net of this greatest of races is 32250 That of the Kentucky Derby will be close to the same sum This assures big fields for the future and feverish interest in the outcome largely accelerated by hopeful investments in future books booksCollectively Collectively the Whitney entry is most favored to win this year The preference is quite justified In Upset Damask Wildair John P Grier and Dr Clark the stable has five formidable colts now on the ground any one of which is quite up to Derby form that is Derby form of this year Which is best is open to argument but certain things in his career last year as well as his splendid race at Havre de Grace recently seem to point to Upset UpsetIn In the running of the Blue Grass Stakes at Lexington last Saturday Peace Pennant ran its mile and an eighth in 1 51 and won from Donna cona by a half length while the latter was a head before Damask which was unlucky in the race All had up Derby weights Assuming each to be capable of running the additional eighth of the Derby in 12l5 would make this trio capable under favorable circumstances of running the Derby distance in 204 Old Rosebud is its only winner in faster time George Smith ran it in exactly that time Every other winner has taken the race in slower time So in this case the three colts named demonstrated in public their theoretical ability to run the Derby route in the same time that sufficed to give George Smith his victory over the fine English colt Star Hawk Obviously their backers have justification It is claimed for Donna cona that he vas most in need of a bruising race and that greater benefit accrued to him from the Blue Grass Stakes than to his opponents The proof of the pudding is in the eating and it will require the proof of the Derby running to demonstrate the truth or fallacy of this theory Golden Broom is a puzzle In native speed he is probably the fastest horse in the Derby But can he stay even the short Derby distance He ran like a great sprinter in the Blue Grass Stakes His failure there may have been due to enforced lack of condition due to this springs un ¬ favorable weather If so he may have been immensely helped by his experience there thereAn An outsider with a chance is Sterling This one has nothing in the way of racing exploits to commend him but there is solid reason to back the claim that he is a greatly improved young horse His trial mile and a quarter in 206 with 126 pounds up gives him a dangerous appearance appearanceBlazes Blazes and Paul Jones will race as an entry Both have excellent records and are fit to race Blazes has been backed to the limit in the future books and with Kummer in the saddle will have an able pilot pilotSandy Sandy Beal made quite an impression when he defeated Paul Jones Wild Air Blazes and King Thrush in the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace He has been backed to win a ton of money and is fit and ready to do his best bestThe The most heavily backed aspirant in the future books is Bersagliere but his showing in the Blue Grass Stakes was not that of a Derby win ¬ ner He has his chance to show that running was wrong wrongThe The others are wellbred young horses but mainly representative of the hopes of their owners Whether forlorn hopes or not will not be long in being disclosed With a fair day and fast track a glorious race is in prospect and fortunate will be they who are present to witness it Good luck to the winner and another and a better day for the losers
