HOW A REAL CHAMPION COLT RACES Jockey Kummcr Tells How Man o War Raced in Winning the Preakness NEW YOUK N Y May 21 Man o War is the greatest race horse I have ever ridden and I have been on Sir ISarton Omar Khayyam Westy Hogan and many other fine horses said jockey Knmmer at Jamaica Wednesday lie had just ar ¬ rived from 1imlico after riding Man War in the 1reakness 1reaknessMan Man o War is not an easy colt to ride con ¬ tinued Kummer lie is heavyheaded because he likes to get his head down He has a powerful stride long and low lie is quick on his feet and catches his stride early and easily easilyHe He was eager in the race and chose to go to the front at once He took a good hold of the bit but unlike most rapid horses he did not lug or pull lie can be restrained without sawing on the hit hitHo Ho bucked twice at the harrier as though eager for the race He was not nervous nor fretful like most horses in their first start of the season but seemed anxious to reach the gate and do what he was out to do doIn In every period of the race Man o War showed amazing speed Not once did I feel him weaken under me The track on the backstretch near the turn after passing the half mile was deep and un ¬ even The soil gave way under bis feet But it did not bother him at all for it was at this point that he opened up the gap on the others that tangled them up upI I did not have to urge or call on him in the race My hands were full keeping him from going out too far in front Once he settled down to his stride when he readied the backstretch he was eager to show his best speed I restrained him Man o War was never fully extended at any time To me the colt seemed to be in perfect physical condition He pulled up with plenty of breath and acted as though he had enjoyed the race lie sure Is a grand horse
