AS TO LORD FALMOUTHS METHODS METHODSWellConsidered WellConsidered Practices That Resulted in a Host of AVinners of Englands Classics BY EXILIC EXILICAVriting AVriting in the May 20 issue of Dailv liaring Form Salvator makes mention of Uird Falinoiiths marvelous success as a breed but fails to state that it was his successful practice to when pos ¬ sible niek the Partisan blood and that by this means such good horses as Silvio Sir Bevys Atlan ¬ tic Spinaway Busybody AVheel of Fortune and others were bred The nicking of the Partisan blood is good but the major part of Lord Falinonlhs success as a breeder lay I am convinced in com biring the strains of Herod Matchem and Eclipse Lord Falmouth bred the Derby winner Silvio from a mating of Blair Athol nnl Silvcrhnir Blair Alhol of Kclipse descent and his dam the Matchem mare Blink Bonny and Silvios dam Silverlmir by Kingston Herod Sir Bevy was by Favoiiius Herod Lady I ingden by Kettledrum Kclipse Atlantic by Thonnaiiby IIiod Hurricane bv A ild Dayrell Herod and hero a point It is only by way of Atlantic that the line of Thormanby carries on and this no doubt because of Atlantics daughters Ixing such a radical out cross for inbred Eclipse stallions Another of Lord Falmouths breeding the Oaks winner Spinaway was also dou ¬ ble Herod by Macaroni Qneeu Bertha by Kings ¬ ton Bred to the Kclipse sire Petrarch Spinaway foaled the Oaks winner Busybody and Busybody v as the dam of the unbeaten Meddler whose daugh ¬ ters on account of the free introduction of such fine strains of brood mare blood through Petrarch Macaroni Kingston and Siiltin sire of Glencoe have proved so amazingly successful as brood mares Lord Falmouths third Two Thousand Guineas win n T the excitable Galliard was also bred Kclipse to Herod by Galopiu Mavis by Macaroni and the appearance of a cross of Galliird in a pedigree I am prone to regard with as much favor as any horse 1 know The wonderful AVheel of Fortune which ran out a series of ten straight victories as a two rnd three year old before meeting defeat in the Yorkshire Oaks was another bred Eclipse to Herod by Adventurer Queen Bertha by Kingston KingstonSalvator Salvator in closing writes Who would want breeding to become an exact science and also goes on to say All the fun and fascination would then be gone and nothing left wherewith Quite right all the fun and fiscinition would be gone from breeding if it was reduced to an exact science but after all the main object to be attained is to bleed something good enough to beat the other fellow and in this is the fun and fascination of blood stock breeding pitting your brain against hi and in racing there is no satisfaction like unto tlat of having bred the winne winneNot Not so long ago I read a magazine article en ¬ titled The Open Secret of Scotland Yard which as in eventhing else worth while is nothing more than hard work The jellyfish proposition of trust ¬ ing to luck or intuition will not work any more in horse breeding than it will at Scotland Yard If certain combinations of blood in the past have re ¬ sulted in the production of the best of the win ¬ ners sires and brood marcs docs it not stand to reason that by following the same formula the ad ¬ vantage is with you Hence my contention that the best results in blood stock breeding are to be had by an intermingling of the blood of Herod Matchem and Kclipse
