VENERABLE WIDOW OFTHE DRUID DIES A correspondent having called my attention to the fact that the death occurred on April 13 at 14 Mrloes road Kensington of Caroline widow of the late Mr Henry Hall Dixon The Drufd barrister at law at the ase of ninetysix writes as follows This demise of this lady will recall to the lover of turf and hunting lore memories ot one of the most charming and erudite as well as one of the hostinformed and most accurate writers on sporting and agricultural subjects for The Druid married the venerable lady in 1R4 when he was a struggling law student studying in the offices of Mers Itaxter solicitors of Ddiieaster She was the third daughter of Mr Thomas Lynes of Hackletou House Northampton and her union with Henry Hall Dixon was one of the happiest They were blessed vith seven sous and four daughters the eldest son Henry Sydeii ham being a wellknown writer on sporting subjects still attached to the staff of Tim Siiorts man and who for many years wrote under the iKm deplume of Vigilant His book published seme years ago entitled From Gladiiteur to Persimmon is a most interesting volume of tnrt recollections The Druid although called to the bar did not find the law to liis taste us a profession and f seived for a short time on the staff of the Doncaster Gazette then iu the editorship of that once wellknown writer on sport James White Martingale whom he succeeded in the editorship upon the latters death ii ISIS In 18rr The Druid after having served on the staff of RelPs Life was offered the post of editor but declined it bis refusal being no doubt a great gain for sporting literature as a whole Hetween 1S and his deatii iu 1S70 The Druids most admirable descriptive volumes ot raciij hunting and field sports were published in the following order Post and Pad ¬ dock in 185i Silk and Scarlet iu 1S5S Scott and Sebright in 1S L Field and Fern in LSI and Saddle and Sirloin in 1STO Subse ¬ quent editions have been published recently by Messrs Vinton the proprietors of Haily Mrs Dixon who was her husbands constant helper and tender and devoted nursj in his last illness was granted a small civil list pension in 1S by Ijid Rosebery in recognition of her husbands valued services and labor in the cause of agricul ¬ ture Auilax in Horse and Hounds
