DONE AT CHURCHILL DOWNS Capital Meeting Comes to an End With Racing in Mud Main Race of the Day Reduced to toTwo Two Starters With General GeneralHaig Haig the Winner LOUISVILLE Ky May 31 Tills day marked curtains down for the most successful racing ever staged it CliurchiU Downs iiul tlio close was attended by ui iiniiienso throng despite unfavor ¬ able weather Racing interest licre throughout the meeting has been simply wonderful and expres sicins of regret were heard in many quarters that the racing was ended Financially the meeting exceeded the expectations of the management although due allowance was made by it for im ¬ provement over former meetings meetingsA A terrific downpour was the order bore during the morning hours and it continued until almost noon when the sun made every effort to pene ¬ trate the heavy clouds During the afternoon the weather continued threatening As a result of tlio drenching the track was an ellipse of deep mud and this was responsible for the disappearance of 1astoureau ami Minto II carded starters in the Decoration Handicap of 2500 intended as the feature Their elimination made it a match test between General llaig and Drastic DrasticAs As a contest it bad no semblance of closeness for General llaig sprinted into a good lead at once and was iiuextended for fhe entire race Drastic followed by ten lengths back for the first balf but the finish found him having reduced the margin to three lengths and going fast fastRumors Rumors that Drastic might not give General llaig much contention resulted in the stewards displac ¬ ing Lunsford with Robinson and that rider ex ¬ erted his best skill but Drastic was no match for the winner though he raced in his best style The incident of changing riders however shows the stewards alertness and indicates a thorny path for possible transgressors of the racing rules rulesRacing Racing today terminated in the proverbial blaze of glory though weather and track conditions were decidedly adverse to outdoor sport sportThe The enthusiasm on tap was of the Derby Day brand and all the winners met with prolonged applause Several of the finishes were hard fought the victor in some instances being only determined ia tlio final stride The small fields in most cases gave opportunity for truly run contests in so far as no inteference was met by any of the starters startersCharles Charles F Price was back in the stand per ¬ forming his duties as usual and fully recovered from the heavy cold he suffered from recently causing his absence from the track for several days daysA A number of the owners braved the discomfort for their horses in the terrific rain this morning and loaded their charges for shipment to Latonia on the few available express cars The shipment this morning was quite an extensive one and the express cars used for their conveyance will be doubled back at once and kept continuously in serv ¬ ice between here and Latonia LatoniaCharles Charles W Clark owner of United Verde Pictor Sway and others departed last night for Califor ¬ nia where he will remain for some time before returning to Tatonia TatoniaMontfort Montfort Tones horses and those of Ed Simms iu charge of trainer Will Wallace were shipped to La I on in yesterday yesterdayllarry llarry 1ayne Whitneys extensive band and those of Mose Goldblatt were also transferred to Latonia last night nightAccording According to advices from track superintendent I firry Rorgenschot at Latonia t litre are over 200 application more than there are stalls at the course This t M in spite of the additional stables that are being feverishly rushed to completion and will be ready for occupancy before the racing be ¬ gins next Saturday
