EXPECT MUCH FROM ATHELINGS STOCK 1 Progeny of This Son of Desmond to Appear in Our Racing Next Year 15 Y F L McKEXXEY McKEXXEYSAX SAX FRAXCISCO Cal July 0 Rome was not built in a day as the timeworn saying has it and a successful stud establishment is not organ ¬ ized in a year or even two or three as is illus ¬ trated often by the experience of wellknown breeders When George Wingfield proprietor of the Nevada Stock Farm purchased the Desmond 1 stallion Atheling several years ago the popular i impression was he had made a good buy as I the handsome bay seemed bound to sire some worth while winners Judging from the appearance of the Atheling yearlings this horse will have out quite a number of winning sons and daughters next year But the skillful breeder was looking far beyond the racing exploits of the immediate offspring of the English stallion when he sent his commissioner abroad to purchase Atheling He was seeking blood that would go on and on through the female side of the house Just because of their potentiality as brood mares the choicest of the Atheling yearling fillies are not for sale at any price priceBoth Both Athelings sire Desmond which is by St Simon LAbbesse de Jouarrc by Trappist and his paternal grandsire Cyllene by Bona Vista Arcadia by Isoiioiny are right at the top of the list of brood mare sires in England Along with the female progeny of Gallinule Persimmon and other noted sires the blood relatives of Atheling are in the greatest demand among the breeders across trie water With Atheling marcs in his stud in the next few years Mr Wingfield has a good chance of turning out some thoroughbreds that will shine in any company anywhere anywhereThat That the Desmond stock is appreciated in all part of the world is shown by the recent sale of the stallion Demosthenes by a New Zealand owner to a New South Wales horseman for Hie substantial sum of 25000 Demosthenes which is by Desmond Carlin by the Robert the Devil horse Chittabob was foaled in 1907 in England and after winning the Doncaster TSpring rHSiiifllcap and other races was sold to tlie New Zealand breeder in 1913 Last year he was the leader in the winning sires list in the far Pacific country His sen Amylhas dam Gold Treasure by the Ben dOr horse Gold Reef is the best threeyedrold in New Zealand and is scheduled to meet Aus ¬ tralias best toward the end of the year Demos ¬ thenes dam Carlin in a daughter of the Petrarch mare Lauretta which is also the granddam of Sunslar familiar to American racegoers as the sire of Siinhonnet Bit of White and other stake winners
