EXCITING TIME WITH A MOTHER WOLF John Siple, a farmer residing two miles and a half from Ida Grove, la., and who, It is claimed, has probably killed more grown wolves for their !onnty than all the rest of the hunters in the county combined, had an exciting time recently with a mother wolf. Mr. Siple had been given a tip where a big wolf and his mate had been making their headquarters and he started out to locate their home. He found several holes where they had been, and finally located one in which he could hear the young ones whining, and supposing that the mother wolf was out foraging, he ! commenced digging into their home. After excavating for a distance of about eight feet along the surface of the earth, to a depth of about two feet, he came to where the hole abruptly startea farther down, and at this point the old she wolf started for the surface to see what the disturbance was. When she poked her nose up out of the hole Mr. Siple struck her with the shovel, and it took several blows with that instrument to turn her back. Mr. Siple then made a jump for his rifle, lying a few feet from where he started digging, and as he turned Mrs. Wolf was coming for him. One shot and the seven cubs, which Mr. Siple afterward dug " out of the hole, were made orphans.
