EASTERN SHORE TO CAREFUL W. J. Salmons Crack Filly Scores Impressive Victory and Handsomely Rewards Her Admirers. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md.. September 25. W. J. Salmons crack filly Careful, carrying top weight of 124 pounds under a masterful ride by Frankie Keogh, this afternoon won the Eastern Shore Handicap at three-quarters of a mile, worth ,000 to the winner. Hildur, running in the colors of 31 K. L. Ross, witli Rodriguez astride, was second and The Baggage, which Mrs. R. I. Miller took out of a claiming race a few days ago from E. B. McLean finished third. General J. M. Gomez, the A. II. Diaz representative, which was accorded favoritism, finished fourth. Step Lightly, the Futurity winner, was withdrawn by trainer Way-land and the W. J. Salmon colors were lightly regarded by the speculators. Careful paid 2.30 in the mutuels. The victory of the Wrack filly was in every way convincing. Keogh, after getting her away quickly, restained her in third place behind Hildur and The Baggage until well through the stretch. Seventy-five yards from the finish Keogh went to the whip and. Careful responding gamely, drew clear to win by a half length. Hildur also held on gamely under vigorous riding by Rodriguez, hut tired at the end and could not successfully withstand Carefnls challenge. The Baggage ran well under her light impost. General J. M. Gomez got started slowly and finished fast, but too late to overtake the leaders. Ideal weather and the best card that has been offered at this meeting brought out a good sized holiday crowd to the course. The racing opened witli a dash at five and a half furlongs for maiden two-year-olds In which Kinetic, the Ogden Kirstie gelding belonging to .T. J. OBrien, made all the pace under good riding by jockey Bryson and paid 105.00 for a ticket. Sugarmint, running in the colors of E. B. McLean, having been claimed by the Washington sportsman in her last race, took the second race, which called for three-year-olds to go a mile. Master Bill, another campaigner which was claimed in his last start, made good for his new owner in winning the third race at a mile and a sixteenth from a shifty band. William Jeffords four-year-old Toddington Understudy colt Rputledge made a runaway of the fourth, a handicap of tllreeqiiarters mile. Daddys Choice, belonging to E. K. Bryson, broke a hip when he became cast in his stall and was destroyed.
