Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan. 30, 1904 , Racing at New Orleans, Los Angeles and Oakland. Alex Shields is of the opinion that Harry Phillips, the jockey recently engaged by him for 1904, is one of the promising lightweight riders of the present generation. Fred Taral, the well-known jockey, -who is spending the winter in New York, has received a list of the winning jockeys in Austria, where he rode last year. He carries off the honors himself, with 345 mounts and 9S winners. H. Lewis, another American boy, is second with 312 mounts and 50 winners.
