Kentucky Derby Candidates Review of Their Credentials PEHONET PEHONETMrs Mrs James B Brown nominated this son of Pebbles Bit o Honey in spite of a very depressive array of losing races Peboney started eight times in his juvenile year and was in the money only once This race ha won easily with a host of maidens trailing after him but in his next start he was beaten far off This Upset colt was acquired by A J Stallings from H C Fisher He ran one race in the Stallings colors in his first year and was not given a chance during the winter to get out of the maiden class Is a stablemate of High Strung nominated by Marshall Field He is chiefly remembered for his winning of the Junior Championship Stakes at Aqueduct last September This was a mile race and Perkins was much the best of a small field He ran coupled with High Strung in one race which the latter latterPORT PORT IIABLE3I IIABLE3IShe She was one of the most sensational per ¬ formers of all the twoyearold fillies in 1928 and contributed materially to the large winnings of the McLean stable She got her start as a winner at Jefferson Park last February and when she reached Kentucky in the spring she began a winning streak which was not halted until she had run up a score of five consecutive victories Her greatest contest was in the Clipsetta Stakes at Latonia which was worth 6G20 to the winner In this she defeated a very respect ¬ able field of fillies including Current and Ben Machree Following this she won an ¬ other valuable filly stake the Illinois Stakes at Fairmount Park This was an even more difficult task for her than the Clipsetta as the distance was a mile and she had up 119 pounds She began her spring racing at Bowie finishing third in her first start there therePRINCESS PRINCESS EDITH EDITHThis This filly of the Royal Stable was very active throughout her first season She scored her first victory at Lincoln Fields in July and afterwards defeated some very good juveniles One of her best performances was when she won the Ivanhoe Purse at Lincoln Fields defeating some older horses at three quarters of a mile Later she won the Ath ¬ ens Purse a filly race over the Futurity course at Lexington finishing ahead of This ¬ tle Fyrn and Sweepsora both of which have figured well in winter races by better than four lengths lengthsPLUMBAGO PLUMBAGO PLUMBAGOThis This Black Toney colt did not emerge from the maiden division until July when he defeated some very good miadens at La tonia Soon after this he was sent into some of the most important stakes for juveniles in the West including the Dearborn Stakes Chicago Heights Handicap and Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes In none of these did he finish in the money but he was not dis ¬ graced He won two races at Fairmount Park and both were over good colts some of which have since made names for themselves In the Tower Grove Purse at five and a half furlongs he defeated Coal Black Petit Pan Ben Machree Naishapur and others He led a field of the same character in the Floris ¬ sant Handicap A third time that he fin ¬ ished in front of Naishapur winner of the Tijuana Derby was in the Mocking Bird Valley Handicap at Churchill Downs in which he finished second to Clyde Van Du sen beaten only a nose This race was at seveneighths of a mile and was probably his best showing He was nominated for the Derby by R S Clark ClarkPOT POT HOT HOTAn An obscure nominee of the Coldstream Stud which was still a maiden at the time of his nomination He began his career at Lexington and raced only at that track and Lexington Was twice in the money in short races PRINCE PAT PATLike Like Vermajo a stablemate Prince Pat won his first start He raced often in his juvenile year and he usually gave a good account of himself though he did not win any very important races Probably his best performance was over the Hawthorne course when he nosed out another stable companion Zacaweista to win the Western Hopeful Purse He was then sent into the American National Futurity but finished far back and his later races in 1928 were not at all flattering THISTLE COOT COOTThough Though he was unplaced in it probably Thistle Coots best race in all of his active campaigning both as a twoyearold and threeyearold was in the Breeders Futurity at Lexington last November This race was Avon by Current one of the most prominent fillies named in the Kentucky Derby This ¬ tle Coot with 122 pounds up finished fifth and about seven lengths behind the winner Every runner which finished ahead of him was one of prominence the others being Windy City Clyde Van Dusen and Dr Free land But since then Thistle Coot has accom ¬ plished very little His winter form has not been at all impressive impressiveTRUNCHEON TRUNCHEON TRUNCHEONA A son of Cudgel and in the hands of men renowned for the winners they have sent to the post R L Gerry owner and George M Odom trainer This is another way of say ¬ ing that Truncheon if he goes in the Derby will go as a running mate of the great High Strung which races this year in the colors of Mr Gerry having raced last year in those of Mr Field On his own resources Trun ¬ cheon would be regarded as a Derby starter unless the mere fact that he was sired by Cudgel would entitle him to such a distinc ¬ tion He has started only twice and cut abso ¬ lutely no figure in the two races This Upset colt nominated by A and S Fuerst was a frequent starter on the Ken ¬ tucky and Illinois tracks as a twoyearold i but accomplished little that would gain him j any consideration as a Derby prospect There was one race at Fairmount Park how 1 ever in which he defeated two good ones Naishapur and Coal Black This was at threequarters of a mile and Uptime had a slight advantage in weights weightsVIGOROUS VIGOROUS VIGOROUSA A candidate of the R S Clark stable which ran only one race as a twoyearold and was not a participant in the winter meet ¬ ings He is by Jim Gaffney Vignola In his solitary start he was made a very strong favorite over a large lot of maidens but ho got away poorly and was not a factor in the result resultWAR WAR TIME TIMEA A son of Man o War nominated by the Three Ds Stable He was not one of the Three Ds colts to engage in winter racing His form as a juvenile was not noteworthy except in one or two possible instances His only notable victory was in a threequarter race at Arlington Park in which he defeated The Choctaw Voltear and one or two other good ones It was on a slow track and War Time was conceded a little weight He went in the Chicago Heights Handicap but fin ¬ ished next to last lastWHITE WHITE POP POPThis This son of Johren nominated by John R Macomber went to the post many times be ¬ fore winning a purse or even accounting for a slice of one His last two performances were his best and as these were the two longest races in which he figured it may be inferred that he wants a distance of ground to run over He won at a mile and seventy yards over an ordinary field in his last ef ¬ fort as a juvenile juvenileWINDSWEPT WINDSWEPT WINDSWEPTHe He made his first start in the Lark Purse at Belmont Park last May and when he wound up his first season of racing at Pini lico in the fall he still was a maiden He entered the Belmont Juvenile Stakes but was one of the last three to finish He was never in the money in his juvenile races W J Salmon nominated him for the Derby DerbyWOOLORAC WOOLORAC WOOLORACWas Was an early starter in the winter races of 1928 at the Fair Grounds being owned by F P Letellier of New Orleans One of his early efforts was in the New Orleans Kinder ¬ garten Stakes in which has was unplaced He accomplished very little in the latter part of his twoyearold racing and has not been conspicuous as a winner during the past winter though he did account for one purse in January defeating several colts which later became candidates for the Louisiana Derby prize prizeJIOGUISH JIOGUISH EYE EYEThis This Flittergold colt is J J C9ughlins hope in the Kentucky Derby and of course the big race in Roguish Eyes career to which Coughlin and his friends will point in sub ¬ stantiation of their support is the Belmont Futurity Stakes That event more valuable in money award than the Derby itself came within the brief margin of a head of going into the Coughlin bag By just that scant difference Roguish Eye was beaten by High Strung With 125 pounds up he kept in close pursuit of High Strung throughout and was never farther back than third He finished in second place three lengths ahead of Jack High HighThough Though beaten off several times in tha early part of his career Roguish Eye got un ¬ der good headway with the winning of the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs the latter part of May This race showed him up as a very highclass colt for with 117 pounds up he had to overcome several disadvantages to win from such good ones as The Okah Vermajo and Clyde Van Dusen He was among the last of the big field to get under headway and had to close a lot of ground in the stretch to get to the front He was not hurried along by trainer Miller but after that won two more races without a re ¬ verse his final victory as a twoyearold be ¬ ing in the Parkway Purse at Hawthorne in which he defeated his stablemate Karl Eitel Prince Pat Naishapur and two or three others His last race before the running of the Futurity Stakes was the American National Futurity in which he finished third to Double Heart and Clyde Van Dusen He probably was best in this race as he was beaten only a halflength after starting in a tangle The chart footnote describes him as finishing faster than the two leaders KUIJICON KUIJICONFrom From a very insignificant beginning at Saratoga this imported representative of the Dorwood Stable became a very consistent racer in Maryland during the Fall although he won only a single race This was a maiden event at Laurel He then finished second in two races but up to the time ha was named in the Derby he had not demon ¬ strated that he could beat good ones SAFETY PIN PINOne One of the trio nominated for the Derby by Earl Sande Safety Pin was bred by J E Madden She was seldom a factor in a race until Sande had started her several times She won one race for him during the Fall meeting at Bowie BowieSANDY SANDY SHORE SHOREThis This son of Uncle Sandy Land nominated by H P Headley distinguished himself once during the past winter when he won a mile I race from Naishapur which less than a month later won the Tijuana Derby As a twoyearold he ran often with good ones without accomplishing anything of note One of his important starts was in the Pimlico Futurity He met with the misfortune of being kicked while at the post by High Strung the winner His injury was not serious enough to keep him long out of rac ¬ ing and later he was found in the Breeders Futurity and Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes The class in these fixtures was probably too much for him nevertheless he has on occa ¬ sions shown a good deal of speed SCARLET BRIGADE BRIGADEHe He made his start with an ordinary band at Fairmount Park and finished last but it wasnt long before he had advanced into the winning column and in his last threa races at that track which was the only track on which he ran as a twoyearold he was not out of the money He was non inated by J C Milanx
