Here and There on the Turf Discovery Recognizes Foe Cavalcade in Greatest Race Lady Reigh Boosts Her Sire Today Shows Much Promise About threesixteenths of a mile from the finish of the American Derby at Washington Parkr Saturday six of the nine candidates 7 for the prize of 23310 were in a compact jgroup and another was not far away Ex ¬ citement was intense as the action up to that point had been thrilling Then the chestnut Discovery with the cerise and white silks of young Alfred Gwynne Vander bilt clearly visible slowly emerged in front Discovery took a short lead no more than a length then he was joined by another colt a brown one and smaller whose jock ¬ eys colors were white with blue cross eashes eashesThe The newcomer cried Howdy Discovery looked over gazed into the clear flashing eye of his companion and the Vanderbilt colt said in whatever manner they use in horse language I know you I saw you in the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and the Preakness at Pimlico Youre Caval ¬ cade Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes horse and I dont like you Run away and leave me alone And Cavalcade replied All right I just wanted to be friendly See you later So Cavalcade ran away and left Discovery alone and in doing so he became the second horse in the long history of the two events to score a double in the Kentucky Derby and American Derby Not only that the smallish son of Lancegaye and Hastily he hardly weighs a thousand pounds further proved he was a worthy candidate for the seasons threeyearold honors Cavalcades Ameri ¬ can Derby effort was superior to anything he had shown this year and it is not sur ¬ prising if consideration is given the asser ¬ tion of trainer Robert A Smith that the colt came up to the engagement in better flesh and spirits than he had for any of his previ ¬ ous races this year yearAway Away poorly in collision with Discovery at the clubhouse caught in a blind opening at the halfmile ground forced to lose many lengths in making his run on the final turn and attempting to swerve as he reached the leaders in the stretch Cavalcade neverthe ¬ less had plenty left as Mack Garner brought him to the finish under a mild handride In coming from sixth position to first in the distance between the sevensixteenths pole and the furlong pole despite a loss of ground Cavalcade must have stepped a quarter mile In better than twentyfour seconds This is indisputable evidence that the son of Lance ¬ gaye is either a great colt or nearly so soCavalcade Cavalcade gave weight also to all his oppo ¬ nents and he did it in a manner to suggest that he could have allowed them more Therefore when he engages some of these horses again as he is likely to do in his next two engagements the Detroit Derby and the Arlington Classic he can be ex ¬ pected to rule a strong favorite unless of course a new opponent of sensational speed Continued on twentyninth page
