A G VANDERBILTS NOW WHAT LASSIE WINNER TRIUMPHS BY A NECK War Beauty Is Second and Piquet Third in Filly Feature Takes Early Lead and Withstands WithstandsKeene Keene Miss in Drive Unerring Unerringan an Easy Winner ARLINGTON HEIGHTS 111 July 15 Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Now What goodlooking chestnut daughter of Chance Play and Thats That fortified her claim to the juvenile filly championship of the year when she captured the eleventh running of the Arlington Lassie Stakes before one of the best Saturday crowds of the meeting The Vanderbilt miss performing under the admiring gaze of her sportsmanowner ran the threequarters of a mile under an impost of 122 pounds in 113 and won by a neck to add 18820 representing first money of a 29900 gross prize to her already con ¬ siderable earnings earningsJohn John O Keenes War Beauty second choice to the winner finished second en ¬ countering bad racing luck while Mrs Payne Whitneys Piquet ran third two lengths farther back Ten twoyearold fillies took part in the stake the richest thus far this year for horses of this type and the others were led past the judges by H P Headleys Cutter The latter closing boldly was only a neck behind Piquet at the wire wireAn An element of luck entered into the victory of Now What which however had nothing to do with the misfortune which beset War Beauty While the Vanderbilt star was rac ¬ ing along in front of the field Pimlico Queen had War Beauty wedged in so tightly against the rail not far back of the leader that the latters rider Johnny Longden finally had to take back backBATHER BATHER UNFORTUNATE UNFORTUNATEAfter After coming out War Beauty rallied smartly but in the stretch she was attempt ¬ ing to lug in and again her rider had to divide his attention between keeping her out in the track and putting her under a drive As it was she finished gamely and left the impression that but for being in trouble on the stretch turn might have been able to reverse the order of finish finishNow Now What ridden by Raymond Workman took command soon after the start and after a quarter gained on her rivals The Demoiselle Stakes winner was three lengths in front going around the turn and still had an advantage of two lengths a furlong from the wire Thereafter she gave ground to War Beauty but Workman never let her give up completely to the delight of her owner and those who made her the favorit at odds of 13 to 10 10Pimlico Pimlico Queen raced in closest pursuit ol the winner for a halfmile and gave way abruptly finally finishing in last place In finishing third Piquet did not have to make up much ground in the stretch but Cuttei was far back in the early furlongs and turned in a splendid effort to finish fourth Continued on fortythird page
