Horses of Ail Ages and Running Ability Given Opportunities in Lincoln Stakes Names of Equine Champions Are Inscribed on Rosters Of Such Added Money Races RacesSTICKNEY STICKNEY 111 May 11 The Lincoln Fields Jockey Club which opens its spring meeting at Hawthorne next Tuesday will offer a series of purses of considerable value during the 29day session On the roster of stakes are a half dozen with purses of 5000 added each and the award money for such events has been so designated as to give thoroughbreds of every age and horses capable of doing their best at various distances a chance toshare in the prize money moneyFor For instance the Joliet Stakes which will be run Saturday May 27 will be at five furlongs and will be for twoyearolds ex ¬ clusively while the Lincoln Handicap to be decided closing day June 17 will be at one and onequarter miles for threeyearolds and upward The distance runners will also have a chance to show to best ad ¬ vantage in the mile and threesixteenths LaSalle Handicap to be run Saturday June 10 and the Francis S Peabody Memorial Handicap at one and onesixteenth miles which is down for decision Memorial Day Tuesday May 30 Sprinters will figure in the sixfurlong Crete Handicap the first Saturday of the meeting and the six and onehalf furlong Steger Handicap to be run Saturday June 3 3The The six stakes are steeped In tradition I with the Crete Joliet and Lincoln having the most background Those events were first decided in 1926 and with the ex ¬ ception of 1932 and 1934 have been run continuously ever since The Steger Hand ¬ icap also had its inaugural running in 1926 but was dropped from the list following the 1931 running and was not again renewed until 1937 With the exception of 1942 it has been run every year since The Francis S Peabody Memorial has been decided every year since 1929 while the LaSalle had its first running in 1937 was dropped in 1938 and renewed in 1939 1939The The names of some horses who have helped make turf history are listed among the winners of the Lincoln Fields stakes Supremus won the first Crete Handicap while Misstep a great Chicago favorite of yesteryear clicked in 1929 and Signator has won the affair for the past two years No Regrets won the first Joliet stakes and was followed by Anita Peabody Hygro and Alsab also won this race Supremus won the first Lincoln Handicap and Chance Play Toro Lady Broadcast and Sun Beau are other turf immortals having garnered first money in that event Mucho Gusto and Equifox each won the race twice twiceMontanaro Montanaro was the first horse to win the Francis Peabody Memorial He was fol ¬ lowed by Paul Bunyan and then Gallant Knight twice in a row rowMucho Mucho Gusto also won this race twice while Myrtlewood defeated the great sprinter Clang in the 1935 running Helens Babe won the first Steger handicap and the next victor was the fine stake horse Chicago ChicagoAside Aside from its stakes the Lincoln Fields management will offer a feature race of 1500 every day while the minimum purse for the meeting will be 1200
