minutes after a special patrolman employed by the track had inspected the barn that the stables regular night watchman Gilbert Jones noted smoke coming from the grooms room and an immediate signal was sounded to everyone in the area The local fire de ¬ partment was notified and arrived on the scene only a few minutes later laterThe The fire by this time however became well fueled by the wooden structure and the straw and hay and swept up into flames that jetted far into the sky It was only by quick action on the part of the grooms that seven horses were saved Sev ¬ eral others were taken from their stalls and turned loose in the area but they darted back into their stalls to join the ghastly sight sightAfter After sensing the futility of attempting to halt the blaze firemen concentrated on keeping it from spreading to the other stables or on to the grandstand which is located approximately 100 yards south of the stable No other structural damage was recorded and the only physical casualty was a slight burn on the hand of one of the grooms Joseph Carter CarterOne One of the most tragic figures on the scene soon after the fire was the veteran trainer Tom Smith This only added to his misery for he is presently sweating out a suspension handed down by the New York Racing Commission for the alleged doping of the horse Magnific Duel DuelSmith Smith who conditioned the Maine Chance horses when they won 589170 in purses last year said this morning morningIt It is impossible to approximate what these horses were worth From their early training it appeared that they would sur ¬ pass the record of the stable last year The yearThe Bat OClipper Star of Night Gay Beau and Samson had shown indications of developing into outstanding stake win ¬ ners and the others were coming along nicely nicelySmith Smith said he talked to Mrs Graham over the telephone and that she was shocked by the news of the tragedy All the horses in the barn he revealed were in ¬ sured suredSmiths Smiths son Jimmy is in charge of the Maine Chance horses stabled at Churchill Downs where he will send Knockdown Lord Boswell and Perfect Bahram to the post in the Kentucky Derby Saturday that he be ¬ lieves Arlington Park is the most thor ¬ oughly equipped racing plant in the coun ¬ try for fire protection and that initial re ¬ ports indicated that all possible precau ¬ tionary measure had been taken before the tragedy He said that electric lights in the area remained lighted which indicated that a shortcircuit hardly could have been responsible LEXINGTON Ky May 2 Leslie Combs n manager of Mrs Elizabeth Grahams racing and breeding interests said here today that the fire which destroyed 22 of her thoroughbreds stabled at Arlington Park would not affect her plans to enter three horses in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Louisville Saturday Combs stated that all the thoroughbreds were insured insuredMrs Mrs Graham who arrived in Louisville today by plane from New York said Combs assured me that Lord Boswell Knockdown and Perfect Bahram will carry her silks in the Derby Of course shewas terribly shocked by the disaster and she lost the cream of her twoyearold string but it will not affect her enthusiasm for racing CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 2 James Smith trainer of the Maine Chance Farm received the shocking news of the disastrous fire which prac ¬ tically wiped out the division of the Mrs Elizabeth Grahamowned establishment at Chicagos Arlington Park from his father Tom Smith who telephoned his son from the scene about 3 a m mMy My father was so broken he could give me but few of the details said the Maine Chance trainer who added sorrowfully Its an awful blow I deeply sympathize with Mrs Graham GrahamCountless Countless turfmen
