JUDGES STAND L By Charles Hatton 1 1Ross Ross Obtains Group of Greentree Babes Flower Bed Points for Arlington Events Chi Favorite Dolly Val Rears Family Goya Ijs French Status Encouraging Here HereLEXINGTON 15The LEXINGTON Ky June 15 The Brandywine Stable of Don Ross obtained a group of wellbred yearlings from Greentree Farm here last season and a few days ago Clarkson Beard shipped four fillies and two colts to the Wilmington establishment One of the nicest of them on paper at least is a filly by Shut Out from Ballarita Shut Out has made a splendid beginning as a sire what with the showy form of Swing Out and Swap Out Greentree has several in trainer John Gavers care at Belmont Park and one particularly well turned filly is the gray Night Game who is out of Drowsy There is also Duval Headleys bay filly Pitcher from the good mare Sparta Shut Out was inspected at Greentree here this morning and one wonders if those who saw him capture the Belmont Stakes of 1942 would know him The son of Equipoise and Goose Egg was a rather country looking colt in training with a good deal of the Chicle influence of his dam about him Since his retirement he has finished out into a stallion more reminiscent of the turfs great Chocolate Soldier There were 15 registered foals in Shut Outs first crop that now are of racing age The notion here is that there are other winners among them Shut Out was not himself the sort that mature slowly for he won off in record time in his own debut at Delaware Park ParkReggie Reggie Cornell is training a string that will give pedi ¬ grees on Arlington Park cards an international tone A good many of them whinney for their oats in French One of the group may provide an interesting element in the twoyearold filly slakes This is H B Delmans rapid Flower Bed who set a track mark of 59 at Garden State and for whom an offer of 50000 is said to have been rejected Flower Bed is a Californian by the late Beau Pere out of the Mahmoud mare Boudoir II The 25000 added Lassie of six furlongs on July 10 is Arling ¬ tons most notable contribution to the countrys roster of twoyearold filly events There are vague reports that five more French horses will join Cornells string includ ¬ ing a twoyearold who won his only start abroad by 10 emphatic lengths lengthsChicago Chicago and Miami racegoers will remember Dolly Val fondly as a frequent winner in high class company a few years ago when she was racing for James Emery Joe Knight now has the daughter of Jean Valjean at his Woodlawn Farm over near Nicholasville She now has a yearling chestnut filly by Chance Sun he advises and a brown filly foal by Balladier The yearling is her first foal and we have bred her this season to Pharamond II Among other things Dolly Val won the Tropical Handicap of 1940 and was second in the Arlington Matron of 38 Our recollection is that Emery claimed her from the Wool ford Farm but she proved a cut above that classification She was bred by Dr Frank Wehle and was out of Marway by Way good the next dam by Huon Her filly by Balladier is inbred remotely to Domino which is scarcely anything to keep her from winning Chicagoans naturally will be interested to follow I Dolly Vals career as a producer She is one of a band of about 20 mares that Knight has for himself and various patrons at Woodlawn WoodlawnGoya Goya IIs owners were delighted of course when Mar ¬ cel Boussacs Corteira whom he sired abroad captured the French Oaks He was ranked second to Djebel on the list of French sires of 1947 and perhaps he will nick even belter with American mares as have many other imporled horses Several visilors from France have freely opined that he will ultimately lead the list of U S sires Djebel is another son of Tourbillon who intrigues our breeders but were afraid Ibis one is nol for sale It occurs to us that il mighl be possible to ship American mares to his court if their owners cared to go that far Djebel is himself a smallish stallion according lo U S turfmen who have inspccled him and he sires insignifi ¬ cant little animals but they win early and seem to slay well Boussac plans lo again visit this counlry later in the season aboul the lime of the International Cup or Jockey Club Gold Cup in which his orange colors are lo be shownTurf shown Turf ana Col Phil Chinn once owned Harmonicas dam acquiring her for 10000 from Faraway as window trimming for a sale in which she fetched 27000 from the late W T Waggoner Two eastern sportswomen seem to have lost interest in the purchase of a large portion of Spindletop The Arlington staff is moving into its offices at the fashionable North Side course Errard has sired some foals who have all the physical characteristics of those that win early Arnold Hanger is said to have selected Harmonica for Hartland as a yearling and to have been the under bidder on Cosmic Missile who was second to her in a CCA Oaks Contrary to reports none of Elmendorf has been sold at least to this writing
