ST LOUIS GOES TO ECONOMY The St Louis Fair Grounds management is wise in its racing way It has opened eighteen stakes for 1897 All are guaranteed Their value is 33300 including a 5000 derby for 1897 1897The The Club Members Handicap which was worth 6000 this year has baen bean reduced to half that figure and the twoyearold toehold championship which was worth 3500 this year will be of 2000 m 1897 The Independence Handicap has been cut from 2500 to l5UO All the other events will be worth 1500 The Gaston Stakes has been discontinued and the Isabella for twoyearold toehold fillies substituted Entries to all events will close January 15 15The The Derby for 1897 has an estimated value of 12000 It will be run some time in June This stake closed with 113 nominations
