ETHERIAL A HIGHCLASS TWOYEAROLD An undoubted twoyearold star of this year is the bay gelding Etherial by Star Shoot Lyndall In his first four starts three at Belmoht Park and one at Sheepshead Bay he was unplaced but he was ripening fast and since finding himself he has won neven races in succession In his first start at Bel iriont Park May 14 he ran fourth to Personal Lu ¬ cille R and Lady Irma and was at 300 to 1 in the Kitting Ho was fourth in his second race sixth In his third and fourth again in his fourth and was backed down in each It wus in the socalled Pansy Stakes at Sheepshead Bay July 2 that he emerged frpm the maiden class Sandpiper was an even moiiev favorite and IHhcrial was at 8 to 1 backed from 10 to 1 The race was over the turf course and Etherial won by five lengths in l12i a new record for the course He had up but elgUtynlrie pounds so that all that could be wild of the race was that it demonstrated him to IK very speedy undep light weight High Range was second and Taboo third thirdAt At Brighton Beach July 9 he won at five and one half furlongs with 109 pounds up In l0tij defeating Joe Madden Sententious and two more and winning by four lengths It was a handicap and Joe Mad ¬ den with 119 pounds up was the favorite At the same track and distance July 15 he defeated Werervliet by two lengths in 1OOJ with Dandy DJxou and three others behind the pair WatersHot was the favorite JJtherial carried 107 pounds Watetvllet 103 July 23 he won again at the same distance by eight lengths in 100 with Sententious second and Ruble third He was the favorite this time with Wise Mason second choice ami carried 109 pounds At Enlplre City August 15 he won by five lengths from Ragman Homecrest and Ethelda at five and one half furlongs in 1075 carrying Ki7 pounds and was at 2 to 0 in the betting At tins sahle track August 2S with 111 pounds up he won easily from Fashion Plate Personal Tom Hayward and The Iippln at threequarters of a mile in 115 the track being safe but slowed up by rain His last start was in the Partridge Stakes at Sheeps ¬ head Bay last Tuesday in which he got off poorly and in consequence only defeated Harngan by a half length at threequarters in l13s Kthortar has not met the highest class twoyear olds of the year and may not be able to cope with thorn But there is no certainty that be caimot Since learning how to race he has disposed of every opponent he has met in the fashion of a real race horse He is very fast carries weight well and stays well Unluckily except in the case of the Partridge he has had no stake engagements and his really brilliant career has been in purse racing H is in one more stake race at Sheepshead Bay the Golden Rod at six and a half furlongs over thfe turf course which is to be run nest Monday Going MondayGoing back to the conditions of two seasons ago a yearling brother to such a racer as Ktherial would then probablj have brought a stiff price probably all of 5000 at auction It is Illustrative C the destructive effects or Governor Hughes cru sudo against racing flint at the salo of Colonel 15 F4 Clays Runnyuiede yearlings last Saturday R T Holloway was able to buy a full brother to Utherlal for 1000 ISthcrlul himself was a bar ¬ gain Being front an untried mare John J Hyland cot him for 300 at the Runnymeile sale June 27 1007 His record Is as follows Year Age Sts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won JOOS 2 11 7 0 0 4 jaijTo
