LEXINGTON FAVORS MUTUEL BETTING Lexington Ky September 19 There is no gen iil feeling here to the favor of the books rather than the auction pools and the parimutuel machines Tills is an old auction town and there will be none of the drawbacks that attend meetings where prac ¬ tically all of the speculators have to be educated to n changed system of betting Auction pools are old here annually on the trotting races and the 7eople of the city and the surrounding country know MIS game The younger element know little about the mutuel machines but they are apt It has been J ventvtwo years since the machines were last up at the Kentucky Association course they having been supnlnuted bv the auctions exclusively in the spring of 1887 and by the hooks a year later But the mtiehines were in use on the local trotting track nut 11 well into the nineties The question book ¬ makers versus machines has been pretty well threshed out by the iwoplo here and the majority if them think with the State Racing Commission tlml under existing conditions the reinstatement of bookmakers would be unwise Betting by auctions mid mutuels is within the law and has been so held liy the present Court of Appeals The popularclamor Is against liookmakerr and whether correctly or in twrectly the bulk ol the evil that has come upon Uie turf has been ctarged to them To reinstate them granting that the revenue to the tracks might lie larger at Latonia particularly would be bad judgment on the part of the track owners to say the least There has been an Intimation that the Latonia management intends to go into the courts for a decision on this question They had better think deeply before they do it
