THE MUTUELS IN AUSTRALIA In Brisbane recently the Queensland Premier deemed it mcesisary to state that the government did not Intend introducing legislation against book ¬ makers and proprietary race courses at present Touching on the totalizator in Queensland remind me that some members of tho Queensland Turf Club who are keen on reform desire a referendum as to whether bookmakers should bn abolished and to have the direction f Hie majority of members put into execution This reads as if the movers arc fairly confident the vole would lie against the book ¬ makers If it should happen that the Queensland Turf Club dispensed with bookmaker it would be fair to look for a reduction of the heavy percentage at present charged machine investors at its meet ¬ ings So far as the totalizator in New South Wales is concerned we buve really heard nothing politically for sonic months but perhaps It may be the calm which Is supposed to precede the storm At any rate It is quietly rumored that we were never nearer legislation favorable to the totalizator than at the present time Sydney Referee
