NECROLOGY OF 1913. Death exacted a heavy toll upon persons prom!- 1 nently identified with the turf during the year. James R. Kcene. Maj. Foxhall A. Dalngerlield. Charles Kohler, William OR. Macdouough, Gen. Stephen Sanford aud George Hendrie make up a list ; of deceased owners and breeders who were pre-emi- nent. James A. McCormick and John J. Ilyland were prominent American trainers who died while pursuing their vocation abroad. "Tommy" Ruins was the shining light among the deceased jockeys, while Judge Joseph J. Burke, John Mackey and "Silver Bill" Riley were others connected with the turf in various capacities whose deaths attracted widespread notice.
