CARBINES GREAT SON One of the most remarkable races on record took place in Australia recently In the three mile race for the Champion Stake Wallace the threeyearold son of Carbine ran a dead heat with the fouryearold foretold Trenton maro macro Quiver According to onlookers no more gallant struggle was evor ever seen on the turf and judging from the time made this statement would seem to be no more than true The first mile and a half was run in 24554 and the last mile and a half in 2 375ii the last half mile being covered in 52J4 seconds To give an idea how fast this time is it may be stated that the first mile and a half was run faster than Ormondes Hormones Derby and the second mile and a half five seconds faster than the fastest Derby on record The record for the distance in this country is 524 made by Drake Carter 4 115 pounds at Sheepshead Shepherd Bay Sep ¬ tember ember 6 1884 What added immensely to the intense excitement of the race was the game struggle between Wallace and Quiver who not only finished together but ran neck and neck a regular dingdong race for the whole of the last mile
