SUNNY WINS THE HANDICAP HANDICAPSunny Handicaps Sunny the cast off from the Hankins Hawkins John ¬ son stable is the hero of Lakeside at present He captured the Decoration Day Handicap yesterday defeating that good and honest horse Redskin in a hard fought contest Sunny may be termed an amphibious horse as he has proved that he can run equally well on a dry track and in mud of various consistency Last Wednes Swedes ¬ day with 75 pounds up he covered a mile and a quarter in 207 beating Jack the Jew by ten lengths Yesterday with 80 pounds Sunny raced with Redskin who was carrying 120 pounds and boat him a length in 215 It was a good per ¬ formance Forman for the threeyearold who by the way is not three till July 8 but it was undoubtedly Redskins best race as he was carrying 40 pounds more and givng giving away 20 pounds Little Hothersall Others rode the winner with excellent judgment and L Soden Sodden handled Redskin better than he has ever done before beforeThough before Though J Steppe is the owner of Sunny he does not reap the benefit of the win as the colt was given him by B J Johnson on the condi condo ¬ tion ion that the Hankins Hawkins Johnson stable should take the two first wins consequently they took the purse on Wednesday which was 300 and the money yesterday which amounted to 1100 After his first win B J Johnson said he was not sorry he got rid of the colt as he did not be ¬ lieve leave he was much good but yesterday he changed his mind and remarked he would give 1500 to get him back Though both Terra Gotta Ota and Folsom are credited with being his sire there is no doubt but that he is by Terra Gotta Ota He is as sound as a bell and will in all probability develop into a good long distance animal animalIt animal It was not a pleasant Decoration Day as the weather was threatening from early morning but in spite of this fully 8000 persons were at Lakeside The stand was tilled to overflowing and during the brief intervals of sunshine the prevailing fashion of floral decorations for womans woman head gear made it look like a flower garden Backers and bookmakers broke almost even as though only two actual favorites won the other winners with the exception of Ash ¬ land were well played playedThe played The principal event was The Decoration Day Handicap one mile and a quarter Eleven were colored on the card but Pat Malloy Mallory Jr and Schiller Chiller declined the issue Redskin though he had the top weights opened favorite but pub ¬ lic laic money forced Snnny to first choice while Sullross Soulless known liking for the mud made him second choice choiceAfter choicest After four breakaways Longdalo Longfellow was off in front to a good start with Merry Monarch sec ¬ ond bond and Redskin third Sunny getting away sixth Little Hothersall Others at once sent Sunny to the front and at the quarter ho was a neck in front of Redskin Soden Sodden was determined not to lot the light weight get away from him and he sent Redskin along on the back stretch leading at the half by a neck with Sunny eight lengths in front of Merry Monarch There was nothing in it now but the two leaders Little Hothersall Others tried to get away and the threeyearold had his neck stretched to keep on even terms with the old horse In tho thou stretch the weight began to tell and the threeyearold had the best of it the whole way home winning by a bare length with Elusive third ten lengths back and the others strung out outIn outing In the opening race Meddler had it all his own way and won in a galop gallop while Freddie L T showed his liking for the mud by running second secondEaster secondment Easter five with T Burns up made all the running in the twoyearold toehold race and won easily by five lengths with Vanessa an easy second Ramona a daughter of Sir Dixons Dixon showed her liking for the mud by winning the third race handily She was well played tho thou talent remembering her second to Bob Lee in similar going a few days ago Dominico Dominic with D Davis up ran a very different race than when he last appeared and finished second secondAshland seconds Ashland is at home in the mud won the mile race at long odds and John Brenock Redneck scored his second win of the day with Weola Ebola WeolaA Ebola A match has been arranged for Monday be ¬ tween teen Big Strive 110 and Waterman 104 at one mile for 500 a side
