YOUNG ORMONDES IMPROVING So far in tho early twoyearold stake entries few of the get of Ormonde appear Some more will come later and their racing is likely to clear away the shadow cast over tho paternal quality of the English champion by the performances of Orestes Men of judgment who saw the Or ¬ monde crop of 1894 and that of 1895 and knew the early and later disposition of Ormonde throw out the doings of Orestes When Or ¬ monde landed in California ho was a glum horse He had neither ambition nor great vitality for months Tho long journey from Rio Janeiro to England from there to New York and across the continent dulled and jaded tho horse He should have had a rest of a year Ormondes first progeny reflected his listless condition A year in Calfornia transformed the horse No more vigorous animal ever lived than he was in 1891 The second Ormondo crop is said to bo an especially good band likely to be brilliantly heard from in a racing way Mr Macdonough made two errors the first in using Ormonde on the edge of his marvellous journey and the second in pushing Orestes into American racing as a sample of Ormondes progeny
