GOSSIP OF THE TURF TURFMany Truman Many longstanding records of hurdle racing have been wiped out within the last three years but not all by any means The old Red Dick mare Suannanoa Susanna carrying 120 pounds went a mile over four hurdles at Brighton Beach July 4 1881 in 1 50 and that stands as the record to this day Ed Corrigans Corrigan trusty horse Winslow covered nine furlongs over the sticks at the old West Side track afterwards Garfield Park August 29 1888 in 2 02l time that stood until Phil Becker marked up 202 at Ingalls Finals Park June 5 1897 Bourke Cockran Cochran probably the great est American steeplechaser covered a mile and a quarter over five hurdles at Brighton Beach November 9 1882 in 216 and this record has so far stood impregnable and is likely to do so for a long time to come Turfman Truman by Revolver carrying 140 pounds did a mile and five fur ¬ longs at Saratoga August 7 1882 in 316 and Kitty Clark by Glenelg Genteel 142 pounds up covered a mile and threequarters treasurers at Monmouth Park in 317 July 12 1882 these performances still rank ¬ ing King as records mainly because the distances are seldom used nowadays nowadaysRecent nowadays Recent successful assaults on hurdle racing records have been made almost exclusively over the San Francisco tracks Ballarat Ballard cut the mile arid a sixteenth record to 1 59 Over the Bay District track November 2 1893 and since then this record has been successively reduced as follows By Mariner Nov 16 1893 to 157 by Vulcan Nov 1 1894 to 155 by Dick OMalley Tomalley Nov 7 1894 te 155 by Flood more Nov 17 1894 to 1 54t and finally by Arte Carte muS emus carrying 132 pounds June 8 1896 to 1 52 Artemus Artemis though fainthearted was a very speedy horse and finding all conditions to his liking on that bright June day simply ran away from his field and recorded a really great per ¬ formance Forman The mile and a half hurdle record has too been chopped down stop by step It had stood at 2 47 jointly held by Kitty Clark and Specula ¬ tion ion for many years but Lodowic Lowdown an American Derby candidate in his 3yearold form cut it to 2 46 at Bay District Nov 14 1894 Stubborn old Bellringer Belling reduced the mark to 2 45I over the same track Oct 12 1895 and finally Mon talvo talon beat a good field Feb 20 1896 and set the record where it now stands at 2 43 Guy long a Chicago favorite traveled a mile and three furlongs over the jumps at Latonia Antonia Oct 2 1885 and this performance still holds good but it was tied by J O C at Ingleside Ingles Nov 4 1896 and by both J O C and Sylvester at Butte Mont August 1897 As far back as 1875 Tom Leathers with but 117 pounds up was credited with doing two miles in 3474 The record was doubtful but it was not erased until Auteuil Fauteuil carrying 132 pounds ran two miles over eight hurdles at Bay District Oct 26 1895 Sturdy weight carrying Buckra Buckram with 168 pounds in the saddle went two and a quarter miles at Brighton Beach Juno 21 1887 in 4 26 and it was not until April 17 1897 that this record was cut to 4 23 by Baby Bill when carrying 150 pounds he captured the Atheneum Athenaeum Club Stakes StakesThe Starkest The table of new hurdle records now stands as follows A useful circuit for racing was shaped last season and is in a fair way to become perman Permian ¬ ent Kent Walter O Farmer of Nashville is the man who shaped the material which grew into his notion out of the Windsor meeting of 1896 and the later conflict of Windsor and Highland Park Highland Park in Farmers hands won The leading members of the new circuit are Wal Walt ¬ ter tear O Farmer who is interested in the Tennes Tenets ¬ see Breeders Association of Nashville Merrill B Mills a millionaire resident of Detroit George M Hendrie Henries of Detroitson Detroit of William Hendrie Henries President of the Canadian Jockey Club Edward Fee a business man Of Detroit Ira E Bride of Detroit and John W Price of Hillsboro Hills Ohio OhioThe Hither The plan perfected is the formation Of a cir ¬ cuit cubit consisting of the following tracks to be utilized for meetings in the order named Nash ¬ ville vile Highland Park Detroit Hamilton Ont Bel Belo Air Montreal Fort Erie Buffalo and Wind ¬ sor soar across the river from Detroit The syndi syndic ¬ cate carte is said to have already secured threeyear three leases on these tracks with an option for five years It proposes to issue a series of stakes some of them in divisions to be run at the dif ¬ ferent ferment meetings They will begin at Nashville and go right along the circuit for spring and autumn meetings of thirty days each eachC each C C BlLEY Billy
