PROSPECTS FOB NEWPORT J Gratz Graft Hanly Hanky the enterprising secretary of the Newport race track arrived home yesterday February 14 after a week spent at New Or ¬ leans His visit south was for the purpose of securing horses for the Newport meeting which begins April 9 Mr Hanly Hanky was eminently successful in his mission and secured the prom ¬ ise ipse of a number of good strings Among those who signified their intention of racing at Newport were the following owners J J McCafferty Charles McCafferty Richard Rome J H Smith Fred Foster W C Fessenden Essence Tom Murphy Gar roll Reid and Clint De Witt Witty Mr Hanly Hanky said that fully 150 horses would come direct to Newport immediately after the close of the New Orleans meeting He also reports that Bennington Kensington Gardner and Green Morris will not race in the west this spring These owners will ship their strings direct to Washington D C for the meeting which opens there April 11 11Clay Clay Woodford Woodward of Paris Ky have applied to Secretary Hanly Hanky for stable room for sixteen horses Alex Shields who has a string of four ¬ teen at Highland Park Detroit has applied for stalls for this summer summerSecretary undersecretary Secretary Hanly Hanky is much pleased with the racing outlook for the Newport track and he estimates that at least 600 horses will be at the meeting meetingCurly meeting Curly Browu Brow will do the starting at the Newport track although as yet the directors of the Queen City Jockey Club have not selected the officials for the meeting Secretary Hanly Hanky is authority for the statement that the Tennes Tenets ¬ see Breeders Association wants Brown to do the starting at their meeting which conflicts however a week with Newport Cincinnati Commercial Tribune
