PRETTY RACING AT LAKESIDE There was some keen racing at Lakeside Satur Saturn ¬ day and a big crowd enjoyed it There were some side lights to the action notably the de ¬ feat of Imp by Abuse in an effervescent race It was not out of line for Abuse unless one had considered his last race last odds and the prices of tho thou present He simply outran Imp five fur ¬ longs in 1 01 Gene Leighs Sleighs recentacquisition Duke of Haven is a handy horse He beat a good field in 1 14i He did it too in an oily sort of way that suggested reserve power powerPop power Pop Dixons Dixon game victory over Joe Shelby in tho thou nino nine furlong race was the other feature of the afternoons racing racingThe racing The latter was a beauty to the eyo yo All down the back stretch tho thou field was in a contending bunch On the far turn Harry Shannon tho thou post favorite retired and Pop Dixon getting through on the inside opened up a big gap About the bond for home Joe Shelby closed on him and the pair fought it out tho thou entire length of the stretch Below the eighth pole Joo Jo Shelby seemed to be winning but Turner per ¬ severing on Pop Dixon managed to win a pretty race by a scant neck W H Laird raised Pop Dixon 300 over his entered price Tho Theo colt races in W E Fieldings Fielding name and in Tony McCaffertys stable After the run up McCaf Mecca f erty arty claimed Joe Shelby and the lattors clatters owner Dave Waldo Weald to get even put in a claim for Harry Shannon The Abuse shock came out of tho thou fifth race He was in with Imp Richard J and other fast sprinters Bloss Loss had tho thou mount and getting Abuse away flying saved ground at every turn and won in a drive by two lengths from Imp Peter McCue McClure showed marvelous speed speedEugene pedigree Eugene Leigh had a good day He took the twoyearold toehold race with Kentucky Colonel and also scored with Duke of Haven The agricultural gentleman late of Kentucky just burned up the ring over the Duke of Haven He had to pay 400 out of his spoils as a tribute to Mr Laird under the financial conditions of the race
