HAWTHORNES HAWTHORNS GOOD RACING In the words of a colored trainer there was a whole lot of doings yesterday at Hawthorne Of the sixtythree sixty entries for the seven races of the day there were eleven scratches and with the exception of Sam Tate the absence of the horses kept in the stable was a positive benefit to the card The track had dried out and was in prime condition although not up to record breaking The day was warm and cloudless with breezes just sufficient to blow away the smoke The crowd was nearly as largo as any of the meeting there being present at the course some 5000 persons With fish to fry there is always plenty of cooks and the book makers in number aggregated twentyone twenty Of these three were of the kind known as field bookmakers an apparent misnomer where such pencilers pencil are as usual planted in the most advantageous position positionThe position The Morton Park Selling Stakes five furlongs for 2yearolds the third race on the card was worth to the winner 1165 to the second horse 200 and 100 to the third Of the fortyfour forty entries only six faced the starter This race was spoiled by a bad start Willie Martin last to come to the post on Ailyar Halyard shot his horse off full on his stride and directly the barrier arose he had lengths the best of all others Ailyar Halyard not headed and never extended won as be pleased from Espionage who beat Canace Cancel easily for the place although Nick Halls filly broke quicker than she did Boney Bony Boy off well ran well and gave Canace Cancel an argument at the finish Excursion dropped back from the bunch on the upper turn Opening at 2 to 1 the winner at one time was favorite at 6 to 5 and held the position starting at 7 to 5 5The The bugle blew for the first race at exactly 2 oclock o'clock Dr Sheppard first away from the post was not headed and won by two lengths Turner going by the judges quite unnecessarily using his whip as if he was threshing wheat The jockey had been worked up to a case of rattle by the determined bid of Storm King always second and later on by the closing in of Eddie Jones The latter with Donna Eita Keita alternated in the second and third positions throughout throughoutClifford throughout Clifford in his best form as a threeyearold ran some marvelous races at Hawthorne but no horse ever showed a bettor performance at this track than did John Bright when on August 9 last he covered one mile carrying 115 pounds in 1401 Yet his post price yesterday was 5 to 1 The remark passed one will never got rich playing Everetts Everett mounts and several of the bookmakers seemed to take it for granted that John Bright might as well be in the barn De ¬ spite the fact that at Washington Park Lady Ellerslio Sellers showed lightning speed and casting aside the matter of a big weight concession in her favor the pencilers pencil so took liberties with Licalzis Localism filly that her price 31 to 1 was as false as the figures against Bannockburn Bannock All this however came about from the excellence of Bannockburns Bannock last race which was run in deep mud So great was the plunge on the horse wearing the colors of the most popular itahorseman talisman of the western turf that Pat Dunnes Dunes horse started at 3 to 5 a price oifly oily laid by Mar ¬ cus cubs Cartwright Cartridge whose game it is to knock down odds on favorites Lady Callahan was left standin standing still at the post At thf theft quarter Lady Ellerslie Wellesley ran in front Bannockburn Bannock lap ¬ ped peed on St Alfonses Alfonso D third close up So they ran to the turn for home John Bright only ono and onehalf Neal lengths back of St Alfonses Alfonso D Entering the straight W Martin was seen to be working on the favorite and a sixteenth fur ¬ ther ether along Bannockburn Bannock sent to the whip was already beaten Everett had cut in next the inside rail and sitting still his horse passed Bannockburn Bannock at the last eighth and gaining gradually passed Lady Ellerslie Wellesley fifty yards out So winning untouched The honesty of racing received a compliment from the public and the handicappers through this win of the best horse where all betting indication said He is not out for the money moneyThe money The most excitement seen this year in any Chicago grandstand was caused by the winning of the recordholder record OConnell O'Connell the women being the loudest to cheer Skeets Skeet Martin who rode the winner OConnell O'Connell went to the post at 10 4 2 The start was an excellent one although OConnell O'Connell Libertine and Paul Qriggs Rigs were dis dais ¬ posed to act badly Off in a bunch with OCon Econ ¬ nell leading in an instant the favorite was seen to falter and fall back Neutral had collided with him and at once Paul Griggs Rigs seemed to be quite out of it Abe Furst Furs ran second and Loy Cloy aletta Valetta third to OConnell O'Connell to the far turn where even Joe Mancini Anacin headed Diggs Digs and still farther away was Paul Griggs Rigs The trio leading came clear in to the end of the betting ring racing in front Here W Martin on the extreme outside was coming fast with the favorite and Skeets Skeet on OConnell O'Connell and Everett on Abe Fnrst Frost set to work to stall him off Diggs Digs on the inside was also close up In a grand rally all around the finish was so close that no one cared to bet which horse had won OCqnnells O'Connell number went up amid great cheering Paul Griggs Rigs was sec ¬ ond bond Abe Furst Furs third while just behind the latter came Loyaletta Loyalty and Diggs Digs DiggsThe Digs The first steeplechase run in Chicago in four years was the medium of a plunge on Orderly owned by McCullongh Buggy This horse led by many lengths over the first three fences but at the water jump opposite the betting ring he dropped back and Troil Roil led over the next jump on sufferance from Proverb who soon went to the front and galloped the balance of the way winning by four lengths As the horses left the post a yell of delight went up from the crowd It was indeed a pretty sight the bright colors of the jockeys being brought out nicely by the fresh washed green of the turf The chief anxiety was occasioned by the fear of accidents but when all the horses cleared the first obstacle the spectators were reassured the more especially as Jersey Lad a horse that seemed to be asleep at the pdst dst was at once pulled up because of boing booing out of it in the first quarter mile Old Hercules ran under a pull once around the course and then appeared to quit with his mouth open Troil Roil was very rank and ran like a green horse Michael G rated along and in the final run had no trouble in disposing of Troil Roil who finished third ten lengths behind him Hercules was at the six ¬ teenth tenth post while Orderly pulled up was at the last eighth eighthMr eighth Mr Caldwell got the horses off at the first attempt to a start in the sixth race whereby the favorite Joe Ullman Pullman was left at the post Bryan went to the front but Eeuben Reuben Eowett Hewlett got him at the turn only to be supplanted into the straight by The Tory The latter died off at the last eighth and Lone Princess com ¬ ing King strong won the race easily from Eeuben Reuben Eowett Hewlett who led the close bunch seconded by Bryan who just beat Warren Point Governor Sheehan was last at the first quarter quarterThe quarter The last raco race was run at 540 Amanda was left at the post La Princessa Princess broke fast and opened a big gap on the favorite Loneta Loretta who however ran her close at the finish Sir Tenny Teeny was always third Brother Fro1 aii1 L ie Miles were close up at the finish the others never being prominent CONTINUED ON SECOND PAGE HAWTHORNES HAWTHORNS GOOD RACING Continued from 1st Page So closed the two weeks of Hawthorne racing The sport has been healthy and the innovation of starting without the recall flag has been ap ¬ proved by the public the horsemen and the bookmakers It is a certainty that nine per ¬ sons out of ten consider young Mr Bruen Braun a bet ¬ ter tear starter than old Mr Caldwell The latter cannot be expected to do as well as did he in the years gone by Nobody has any thing but the kindest feeling toward him but some com ¬ pare him to Captain A C Anson Anon whose day in base ball has gone by Under the correct sys says ¬ tem of starting valuable time is saved Satur Saturn ¬ day at Hawthorne the seven races were run in three hours and forty minutes and neverthe nevertheless ¬ less there was ample time for horseman and turf speculator to transact business businessThere business There was a rumor to the effect that Thorpe had been drinking and was unfit to ride Joe Ullman Pullman The jockey went to the judges stand and showed himself to be as sober as a judge as the public discovered as he sauntered here and there in front of the grand stand The leaving of Joe Ullman Pullman was credited entirely to the poor work of the starter starterHenry starter Henry Avis has telegraphed Secretary Knhl Kohl that he will reach Hawthorne Tuesday morning next with six head of horses
